About this listen
The old gods are growing restless. An ancient evil is stirring. Can they stop the coming storm?
Mercenary Casia Greythorne cares about two things: completing whatever her latest job is and earning enough coin to buy the expensive medicine that's keeping her mentor alive.
So when the king himself offers her a job, she can't resist the massive reward he offers - even if it means working with Captain Elander, the arrogant, mysterious right-hand to that king.
Her partner may be infuriating, but at least their mission seems simple and quick enough: investigate the origins of the strange plague that's been ravaging their empire, help find a cure, and then call it a day.
But in a land brimming with old magic and meddling gods, nothing is ever that simple, and nothing is ever what it seems.
As the bodies pile up and strange monsters begin to wreak havoc throughout the realms, Cas and Elander will have to work together to protect their world whether they like it or not. Because one thing is clear: Something ancient and evil is stirring in the shadows of that world.
And their empire will not survive its full unleashing.

Action packed
Action packed from the very start, with well rounded characters and great world building. Cas is afflicted with a sickness that has killed everyone else it has touched, apart from Cas an her mentor, who she tries to keep alive with an outlawed medicine.
I enjoyed the different characters, Cas's fellow mercenaries and the Captain's crew alike. The outlawed magic system and Cas's discovery of her own magic, gods and monsters and a King who may not be what she first thought.

Good
the book was good if lacking in some areas. the story and magic was interesting. the characters enjoyable, even if the side characters where a bit underdeveloped. the reveal at the end was part painfully obvious and part nicely hinted to but still a bit surprising. what I did not like was the romance.
I can see some cemestry there but any time cass thinks about him it's soo annoying. I wish they would have skiped all the time she just reapeated that he hot. or thinking back to past encounters and daydreaming about that. when they actually interact with one another it's okay, but we are stuck in cass head and have to listen to her inner monolog far to much.

Wonderful narration of a great story.
I really enjoyed the narrators style and accents. I assume the male characters accent was meant to be Scottish but as a Scot it missed the mark for me and ended up sounding like a Scottish/ Russian and a bit English mix but I absolutely loved it! Loved the story too, don't think I've ever listened to an audiobook so solidly! it's a 'page turner'. Can't wait to read the next one.

Damned Fine Romp
Jesse Valensky’s PERFECT narration 👍👍👍
(but not so much her garbled mess of a Scottish/Irish accent 😱)

100% reccomend
Brilliant story, brilliant narration. Fantasy and romance, what’s not to love? We had some really good side characters too. I’d have like them to be a little more fleshed out but hopefully book 2 will do that. I knew some kind of big twist was coming but I didn’t guess it which I was pleasantly surprised about. Definitely recommend.

Amazing
Wow. Where to start. I loved this book. The world building, the characters, the romance. I loved it all. I’ve already downloaded the next two books. I know there’s five in the series so hurry up audible and get the rest of them on here. The narrator, by the way, was exceptional. I loved her and she really brought all the characters to life. I’m off to listen to book 2 and if it’s anything like this one I’ll of listened all night and will be reviewing tomorrow. It really was that good.

Honestly Amazing
For fantasy lovers everywhere!
I don't usually write reviews but this book exceeded every expectation. From the magic, to the characters, to the people; the author artfully builds an intriguing world that will help you get blissfully swept away, and out of your listening slump. The slow burn romance didn't take away from any other aspect of the story, which is delightfully underated. I would recommend this book to any and all SJ Maas lovers in a heartbeat.
The narrator also deserves a mountain of praise. She brought each character to life and the accents were flawless, for sure. I will definitely be seeking out her other performances in the near future - as soon as I'm done with this series of course!

love it
This book had me gripped from the beginning. The world building and the characters of this book had me in a choke hold from start to finish. Casia greythorne, a young girl, has found on the street. Who as the sickness but servives. Who cares deeply for those close to her. She gets a job to earn enough coin for her mentor. There's a plot twist. There is romance and spice (just a little)
Elander is a great MMC. he is a protective and caring character. Is full off knowledge.
If there is any book you should read, i would say it is this one. It's an amazing book. Everything you would want and need.
brilliant listening too
