About this listen

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Selection series comes this sweeping standalone fantasy romance. A girl with a secret. The boy of her dreams. An ocean between them.

Throughout the ages, the Ocean has occasionally rescued young women from drowning. To repay their debt, these young women must serve for 100 years as Sirens, remaining young and beautiful and using their deadly voices to lure strangers into watery graves. To keep their true nature secret, Sirens must never speak to humans, and must be careful never to stay in the same place for too long. But once her century of service is over, each Siren gets a chance to start over – a chance to live the mortal life that was almost stolen from her.

Kahlen became a Siren after her family died in a terrible shipwreck, decades ago. And though a single word from her can kill, she can’t resist spending her days on land, watching ordinary people and longing for the day when she will be able to speak and laugh and live freely among them again.

Kahlen is resigned to finishing her sentence in solitude…until she meets Akinli. Handsome, caring, and kind, Akinli is everything Kahlen ever dreamed of. And though she can’t talk to him, they soon forge a connection neither of them can deny… and Kahlen doesn’t want to.

Falling in love with a human breaks all of the Ocean’s rules, and if the Ocean discovers Kahlen’s feelings, she’ll be forced to leave Akinli for good. But for the first time in a lifetime of following the rules, Kahlen is determined to follow her heart.

Now this week I decided to listen to it on audio and OMG the voices are brilliant, gripping and incredible. I COULDN'T STOP listening to it. I WOULD totally recommend to listen to this on audio you WILL NOT regret it!!! So sad I didn't want the book to end. Overall for everything it's a book I would read again and again

Unique plot

This is my first read by Kiera Cass and I loved it, I thought this was a very unique plot which I haven’t come across before. In the first chapter we are introduced to Kahlen and find out how she became a Siren, we are then swiftly moved 80 years on to the present day where Kahlen and her sisters, also sirens, are living near a university campus. Then one day Kahlen comes across a boy, Akinli, and falls in love…

From the beginning of this book I was intrigued, the set up was brilliant and I loved that we got to first see how Kahlen became a Siren rather than just jumping straight into the story and Kiera working this in at a later time. The characters were great especially Miaka, Elizabeth, two of Kahlens sisters that are present throughout the book.

My only flaw with this book is that I didn’t find the chemistry between Kahlen and Akinli that amazing, I think it was a great love story but it all went very quick and I didn’t get the butterfly feeling of an epic love story that I have in other books.

Overall I still think this was a great read and I’m glad I picked it up, with the uniqueness of the storyline but the lack of chemistry I felt with Kahlen and Akinli I’m giving this book 4 stars.

It's all a bit pointless?

I kept waiting for the actual story to start - the part where it was anything other than Kahlan complaining because she was in love. Nope, that's it. Kahlen is in love. Don't worry if you missed that part, because it'll be rammed home a dozen more times before you can blink. Then the whole thing at the end. I thought I could see it coming, but surely it couldn't possibly be going down such a trite, downright nauseating route? Unfortunately it absolutely could.

Very disappointing after The Selection. With that story, there was a reason for it all to be focussed on love, etc, and even so there were other things going on. Not so much this time. Wish I'd listened to my first instinct and stopped listening an hour in.
