Summary

It's always been just Kate and her mom - and her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family, and the fear her mother won't live past the fall.

Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld - and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.

Kate is sure he's crazy - until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride, and a goddess.

Very poor story

Would you try another book written by Aimée Carter or narrated by Brittany Pressley?

The narrator was fine, not a bad voice. Easy to listen to. Not sure I would try another book by the author though. I am a big fan of Greek myths, this however was not my cup of tea. For example *spoiler start* the seven deadly sins? Are you serious? *spoiler end*

What was most disappointing about Aimée Carter’s story?

*Spoilers* Once I got passed my problems with the basic story (the idea that Persephone was able to die to spend the afterlife with her mortal love and Demeter a mortal child to marry off to Hades, oh wait I mean Henry) it was lacking depth. Kate has a dying mother (who cant really die as she is immortal but Kate doesn't know that) but she has no life outside this, she spends her teen years looking after a sick and dying Mum, who hangs on for years after being given only months to begin with. She says herself once her Mum dies she has nothing left to really live for.
Henry is stuck in a pit of misery because Persephone doesn't love him, and is going to Fade, and his duties as Lord of the Underworld are to much for him on his own. Hang on what?! Hades, Lord of the Underworld, King of the Dead, he cant manage his duties? He is a God!! He is the essence of death and the afterlife, and the Council (the Olympians) wants to pass it off to his Nephew, James, aka Hermes?! Yeah, okay. Hades/Henry cant manage it but the messenger of the gods can?

How could the performance have been better?

The performance was fine. It was the book she was reading that let her down.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It was easy to listen to whilst I was working. It didn't take much effort, and I didn't feel like I had to pay too much attention to keep up. I think the author, had she fleshed out the characters, and made it less misogynistic it could have been a good read.
