Summary

A young reporter must come to terms with his past - and present - while investigating the murder of a man he believes could be his father.

Joe Talbert, Jr. has never once met his namesake. Now out of college, a cub reporter for the Associated Press in Minneapolis, he stumbles across a story describing the murder of a man named Joseph Talbert in a small town in southern Minnesota.

Full of curiosity about whether this man might be his father, Joe is shocked to find that none of the town's residents have much to say about the dead man - other than that his death was long overdue. Joe discovers that the dead man was a loathsome lowlife who cheated his neighbors, threatened his daughter, and squandered his wife's inheritance after she, too, passed away - an inheritance that may now be Joe's.

Mired in uncertainty and plagued by his own devastated relationship with his mother, who is seeking get back into her son's life, Joe must put together the missing pieces of his family history - before his quest for discovery threatens to put him in a grave of his own.

Oh my goodness I love the story, characters, the narrative and narrater. After listening to the first one free on audio of The lives we Bury, I had to listen to more. Allen Eskens is a fantastic writer and can’t wait to listen to more.

Almost as good as Book 1

I skipped straight to this book in the Joe Talbert series after reading Book 1 (The Life We Bury) which was superb — and seeing what reviewers were saying about the intervening books. It sounds as if Audible might be a bit off with their series listing here. I probably will try the other books, but wanted more Joe, Lila and Jeremy so went for this one after having the first book as a freebie. It’s good. Not quite as good as The Life We Bury, but pretty darn good and I’d recommend it. Very glad to have discovered Allen Eskens!

My Hero

Love the characters in this book, I really cared about them and Joe is one of my favourites. I am so glad the book worked out the way it did for him, he is a true hero.

im this author's number 1 fan

honestly it all started with book 1 and I've been following the collection ever since, never in my life have I invested time in fiction books (always thought it was a waste of time) but I got recommended the first in the series on the plus catalogue and it's been a love story ever since. the characters pull you in, the twists and turns have you gripped and overall the performance is amazing (book 2 was a struggle on the narration but story 10/10) this one doesn't disappoint, an amazing story and great followup to the lives we bury. I can't recommend this author enough.
