About this listen

Book 2 in the Watchers of the Throne series

A new day has dawned for the Imperium, but not everyone sees the light. The Custodian Guard and Sisters of Silence must battle not just Chaos, but those who do not share Regent Guilliman's vision....

Listen to it because:

See how enemies lurk everywhere in the Imperium - even on Terra itself - and discover how the Adeptus Custodes excel at rooting out the darkness that lurks on the Throneworld and bringing it to light.

The story:

As Guilliman, Regent of Terra, heads off to lead the Indomitus Crusade, he leaves behind a world still in turmoil, beset by cult activity. Stripped of its huge armies for the galactic offensive, recovery is precarious. The Custodians do what they can while keeping the Palace secure, and the Sisters of Silence rebuild their citadel on Luna. When the warship Phalanx returns, it seems that stability will at last be assured. However, as reconquest forces push out further into the slums, they come across signs that another mysterious foe is active. The truth dawns - not every enemy is corrupted by Chaos, for there are many on Terra who do not share Guilliman’s vision of a new order, and the prospect of a Terran civil war looms...

Politics, intrigue and Minotaurs!

This book is a superb second outing for the new power couple in the Warhammer universe, I’m not ignoring the chancellerus at all but the characters I want more of are our favourite custodian and silent sister, the narration is outstanding and completely engrossed me in the tale, I looke forward avidly to the next story in this series

Great

Very enjoyable, just a great story. Love Custodian based action as well as Anathema Psykana content. The story was quite captivating.

Excellent.

Excellent book, never thought a book in the WH40K universe centred around politics on one planet could be so enthralling, yet it was just that.

INTRIGUE AND FIREPOWER

Really enjoying how this series is unfolding, mix of subterfuge, characters and the bloodlust of the 40k universe.

Chris Wraight does it again.

Chris Wraight has managed to give what should be boring vanilla characters a great personality. Great story with interesting twists. Would recommend.

game of thrones in 40k

where this book excels is not the depiction of custodes and sisters of silence as peerless warriors, but the political machinations on the throne world of the high Lords. The first in the series was about defending Terra from the greatest threat since the heresy, and was very combat heavy. This book is about the political upheaval of changing 10k year old power structures, and the interests vested in them. There is still sufficient fighting to keep the wargamers interested, and the presentation of astartes next to custodes is intriguing, but i found myself most interested in chancellor Jek's chapters, a baseline human who holds one if the most important ranks in the imperium. The bitterly cynical, almost heretical, thoughts of sister Aleya, also are an interesting take. She is a loyalist but hates the corruption and lethargy of the imperium.

the three narrators are excellent, and I found their individual performances distinctive.

I'm dissapointed this does not have whisper-sync with the e-book, and there are oddities like the character of Jek being written as Jeck in the chapter titles.

Really enjoyed it

Really enjoyed this and was pleasantly surprised with all the twists and turns in the plot. Also one of the best narrated black library novels out there.

excellent follow up, bring on book 3

I started the regents shadow immediately after watchers of the throne, and I now can't wait for the third installment (if there is to be one). the story continues to follow 3 main characters and show many aspects of the imperium, chaos and 40k law. an excellent listen for anyone who likes Custodes , imperial forces and wants to know what's going on at the start of indomitus. there are some surprise appearences in this book and some scenes where I had to stop what I was doing to just sit back listen and enjoy. really well written and gripping from start to finish.
