Summary

Pisa, May 1364.

Sir William Gold is looking forward to a lucrative career as a hired sword in the endless warring between Italy's city states. But when a message comes from the Grand Master of the Hospitaliers, William is forced to leave his dreams of fame and fortune behind him.

The Hospitaliers are gathering men for a crusade, and Sir William must join them. Yet before they set out for the holy land, the knights face deadly adversaries much closer to home....

In the twisting politics of Italy, no one can be trusted. And there are those who would be pleased to see the crusade fail....

Can Sir William and his knights survive this impossible mission into the heart of the enemy?

An Epic Adventure

I have always had a liking for stories in which the past is recollected and retold by a now aged veteran of the times depicted. I have read some excellent works by notable authors such as Rosemary Sutcliff and Bernard Cornwell, both of whom have, on occasion, employed this method of story telling. The Ill-Made Knight, together with its sequels, are, in my opinion, amongst the very best. The books paint such a vivid picture of a soldiers life in medieval europe, that they bring history to life in all of its brutal, shocking and sometimes, tender and comic reality. The story is a wonderful and totally engrossing epic and the narrators are both quite exceptional. Books 1 and 2 are brilliantly narrated by Saul Reichlin and book 3 by Peter Noble. A highly recommended read or listen!

Amazing historical background

The life of a knight and the sacking of Alexandria by “crusaders” told in staggering historical detail, from the armour they wore, to the method of fighting, weapons, horses, and above all the extremely fragmented and complicated politics of the time. Tremendous series, shocking but brilliant at the same time. All matched by a superb narration bringing everything to life. Can’t wait to read the rest of the books in this series, just awesome.

If you're on book two then you're as hooked as I am! The devastating reality and brutality carries on....

A truely epic listen.

I gave read and listened to scores of books about this era but rarely, if ever, come across a story so well written and narrated. A story of love, chivalry, friendship, loss, betrayal, war, death and the seedier side of humanity. Not for the faint hearted or those that might think this is about the victorian image of chivalry. Whilst our hero is a chivalrous knight and human being those around him definitely are not. If there was ever a doubt that Christian Cameron can raise his banner beside the greats of medieval story telling let this story be his admittance. Once again, superbly read by Saul Reichlin who adds his gravitas to this story. Only sad that Saul is not reading the 3rd book in the series.

Entertaining enough

My first audio book was good enough once I got used to the narrators cadence. Worth a read but I think the first book in the series was a better story.

A recommend for medieval history &fantasy fans

In part two in the series we may again enjoy an account of William Gold's exploits, featuring the 1365 crusade and many of the characters from book one. Also, a shout out for Saul Reichlin. Hope to see book three of the series narrated by him as well. Would definitely purchase it!
