About this listen

Tom Mison, star of the hit Fox series Sleepy Hollow, narrates the classic Washington Irving short story.

In the secluded Dutch territory of Sleepy Hollow, nebbish schoolmaster Ichabod Crane competes with the town hero for the hand of Katrina Van Tassel, the 18-year-old daughter and sole child of a wealthy farmer. As Crane leaves a party at the Van Tassel's farm one autumn evening, he is pursued by the Headless Horseman, an apparition said to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper snuffed out by a stray cannonball during the Revolutionary War.

Editor reviews

Washington Irving’s classic short horror story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, is still as affecting and creepy as when it was first written. Ichabod Crane, a lugubrious schoolteacher, wishes to marry Katrina Van Tassel, thus securing her father’s fortune. However, it seems that the Headless Horseman, the ghost of a Hessian trooper decapitated during the Revolutionary War, has other plans for him. The story became a Tim Burton film starring Johnny Depp in 1999, and is now a hit television series starring Tom Mison.

Critic reviews

"Tom Mison's voice is delicious. His precise British diction allows listeners to savor Irving's sumptuous descriptions and sly humor. There are many pleasures to be found in Mison's rendition of the brief classic story, though a few instances of Irving's casual racism grate on modern ears. Listen for yourself and discover why it has so captured our collective imagination. (Mison himself stars in Sleepy Hollow, the current TV incarnation.) Whether you're familiar with the original story of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman or not, Mison's reading is a gratifying way to experience it." ( AudioFile)

Story Telling at its best

Tom Mison delivers this legendary tale with eloquent humour and spellbinding suspense. Sitting by the old wood fire, listening to Tom's narration painted my imagination with all the finery and technicolour of Washington Irving's rich text. This recording was so entertaining, I played again, immediately and enjoyed it's replay with equal delight.

Transported me years into the past

A good old-fashioned ghost story with refreshing detail. If you're looking for an easy read to send you back to a different time, this is the one.

Brilliant story telling

Would you listen to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow again? Why?

Yes - Everyone knows the main story thanks to the film, but stories like this are a wonderful insight into another time period

What did you like best about this story?

The story itself, I love ghost and sci-fi and horror stories, this has a little of all three

What about Tom Mison’s performance did you like?

His accent and way he tells the story helps to pull you into the story itself, he can convey the urgency of words or let you know when you can relax a little before the next heart racing chapter.

Short but Sweet

An excellent choice using the television Ichabod to read the story and this adds to the charm. A short story which has lasted well.
