About this listen

On a quiet fall evening in the small, peaceful town of Mill Valley, California, Dr. Miles Bennell discovers an insidious, horrifying plot. Silently, subtly, almost imperceptibly, alien life-forms are taking over the bodies and minds of his neighbors, his friends, his family, the woman he loves, and the world as he knows it.

This classic 1955 thriller of the triumph of the human spirit over an invisible enemy inspired the acclaimed 1956 film, directed by Don Siegel and named one of Time magazine's 100 Best Films. Blackstone's edition is read by Don Siegel's son, actor-director Kristoffer Tabori, an Emmy and Audie Award winner, and concludes with the narrator's insider reminiscences of his father's work on the film.

Captivated from the beginning

I don’t usually write reviews but this is the first audiobook I’ve felt i wanted to. This book had me drawn in from the get go until the end. I have seen the films before but what happens in this story is quite a bit different to what I’ve seen. It had me curious and a little unnerved right from the start just like the characters in the story. I wanted to know what was going on and what was coming next. There was one part that even gave me the creeps. Don’t be put off if you listen to the sample. The narrator does an excellent job of building up the atmosphere and the pace as the story goes along. His voice more quiet and slow at the start to match the scene of the quiet little town where it’s set. As the story goes on and depending on the characters his voice changes appropriately and with more urgency and volume. Keeping you entertained. I liked his voice in the sense it reminded me of the sound of old detective and mystery shows and films. So a personal like or preference to me. The book was just the right length for me. It was able to keep a good almost constant pace throughout where by i wanted to listen to every word. Unlike some audio books which i can zone in and out of or even partly fall asleep to without it being a great miss to the story. I throughly enjoyed it and would listen to it again

Very good – what a voice

Loved the narrator's voice – he reminded me a little bit of Tom Waits at times. Really enjoyed this one.

Haunting.

Today I have decided that this is a Brexit analogy. When you think you are a part of a world and but by bit find it dismantled by takes. Each generation has its own analogy of this story and it holds up every time.
Slowly and surely the events of the story creep into your consciousness. That corner of the eye weekdays nothing is what it seems. Listen to the original inspiration for those nightmares lurking at the edge of your mind.

Astounding Tale and Thought Provoking!

Having seen the classic movie with the talented Donald Sutherland it's 50's era predecessor and reboots I was pretty familiar with the story and went into this audiobook with preconceptions. After only a short time I realised the book is a separate entity. Similar yes yet also different.
The narration is imo a little lifeless but passable.
Definitely worth a listen and for me one I shall go back to again and again.
There is a message in this story, what does it mean to you?

Feels like a good B-movie , pleasant read but a bit tongue in cheek.

Classic story told well.

The production values are all that let this book down which is a shame as the performance is great. The dates are altered to move the story into the seventies but when you hear it you can't help but be in 1950s America. The ending of the book is different from the filmic endings I have seen and perhaps not as strong but all the sense of dread and abnormalities hidden amongst the everyday is here. Well worth a listen.
