About this listen

A dark and brilliant new stand-alone thriller from a rising star in the crime genre.

He is her husband. She is his captive.

Her husband calls her Jane. That is not her name.

She lives in a small farm cottage, surrounded by vast, open fields. Everywhere she looks, there is space. But she is trapped. No one knows how she got to the UK: no one knows she is there. Visitors rarely come to the farm; if they do, she is never seen.

Her husband records her every movement during the day. If he doesn't like what he sees, she is punished.

For a long time, escape seemed impossible. But now, something has changed. She has a reason to live and a reason to fight.

Now, she is watching him and waiting....

Terrifying

This book had me terrified and horrified and hopeful. It was an absolute rollercoaster, especially towards the end. Every part of me was willing ‘Jane’ to survive and I was exclaiming out loud and praying for her!! I listened in two sittings (it’s now 04:25, I’ve finished, that’s how much it gripped me) and I can now at last get to sleep. Highly recommended.

Best book I have ever listened to!

This amazing story had me so gripped that I sometimes had to take a break just to relieve the tension and prepare myself for what was to come.

Listening to it was like peeling an onion apart layer by layer. Every time you thought you knew where you were with the story, another layer appeared with astounding twists.

I cannot fault this book in any way and could recommend it highly enough. Read it, listen to it, do BOTH! Especially before an inevitable film is made! Don’t sacrifice hours of delicious delicious tension and discovery to watch it on screen first!

Best book I’ve listened to in a long time

Although the subject matter of the story is difficult, it is so well written that it doesn’t descend into darkness. The author’s repetitive use of words and phrases is extraordinarily impactful, for example the way ‘Jane’ insists on calling everything ‘his’ or ‘his mother’s’. And the narrator deserves special mention too. She was exceptional, in pace, tone and accents. I would recommend this audio book very highly.

A great read

A great read, cleverly narrated and some seriously tense and claustrophobic moments. Will be recommending!

WoW

Loved this book, the narration was excellent. Some parts were difficult to listen to, but difficult to stop listening to at the same time. Would highly recommend this book for its storyline, characters and suspense.

Great story from start to end.

I felt I was right in there with her, through all her experiences, felt so sorry for what she went through no one should be treated like that.

OUTSTANDING

The Last Thing to Burn will stay with me for a very long time. The pace makes your heart race as you will Jane to escape her abusive husband. His controlling behaviour is captured perfectly by Will Dean and will make any previous victim shake to the core. I rarely dish out 5 stars but this book is simply outstanding. Buckle up it's an emotional roller-coaster. It's up there with Where The Crawdads Sing and American Dirt.
