To give them hope she must tell their story

It’s 1946. The war is over, and Juliet Ashton has writer’s block. But when she receives a letter from Dawsey Adams of Guernsey – a total stranger living halfway across the Channel, who has come across her name written in a second hand book – she enters into a correspondence with him, and in time with all the members of the extraordinary Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

Through their letters, the society tell Juliet about life on the island, their love of books – and the long shadow cast by their time living under German occupation. Drawn into their irresistible world, Juliet sets sail for the island, changing her life forever.

Much better than the movie

I came to listen to this audiobook because I loved the movie but I was pleasantly surprised. I think you would be disappointed if you watch the movie after reading the book. All round such a brilliant story and a great performance.

Thoroughly enjoyed.

I waited a little while after after watching the film, so not to be conscious of the differences. I’m glad.i did.
I was prepared for more of the story to be told through letters; the names being distinctive helping me keep track with who’s who. This device built up anticipation for when Juliette finally got to the Island. I was really pleased how close the narrators voice was to Lily Allen’s. It was beautifully read.

Beautiful Story

Absolutely loved this book. A lovely, gentle, humorous story, beautifully narrated and with a cast of characters I would be glad to have as friends. I wasn't expecting it to be written as a series of letters but it worked really well. If I had one criticism, it would be that it wasn't long enough!

Letter writing

Loved this story. What a reminder of how much letter writing can be a joy. So much more precious than emails.

Excellent

Tons better than the film.

Much more detailed of course, and although it’s fictional it is probably a good explanation of what life really was like under the occupation, the fear and the brutality of the occupying force.

Beautifully read by Charlie Norfolk.

Love the amusing art of letter writing

It is a very amusing book, built largely on the art of letter writing, and the developing characters
