Summary

The old saying goes, "To the man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail". But anyone who has done any kind of project knows a hammer often isn't enough.

The more tools you have at your disposal, the more likely you'll use the right tool for the job - and get it done right.

The same is true when it comes to your thinking. The quality of your outcomes depends on the mental models in your head. And most people are going through life with little more than a hammer.

Until now.

The Great Mental Models: General Thinking Concepts is the first book in The Great Mental Models series designed to upgrade your thinking with the best, most useful and powerful tools so you always have the right one on hand.

This volume details nine of the most versatile all-purpose mental models you can use right away to improve your decision making, your productivity, and how clearly you see the world. You will discover what forces govern the universe and how to focus your efforts so you can harness them to your advantage, rather than fight with them or, worse yet, ignore them.

Great collection

A great compendium of some of the the best foundational mental models. Looking forward to exploring the rest of the collection.

Great listen!

Fantastic, short and incredibly useful - in many ways the perfect audio book.

I have noted some reviewers have been dissatisfied with the narration but I really quite liked it. He explains things in a matter of fact and concise manner with consistent enunciation throughout.

Highly recommended.

Amazing!

Only wish it never ended, not even a second of the audiobook felt redundant. Hope for sequels to come soon.

Amazing, some of the models rock :)

I have been reading Shane’s blog for several months. And I was delighted how he introduced mental models.
So when the audiobook came out - I bought it :)
Amazing audiobook. I have listened to it four times now and still find new a applicable ideas (I am Managing Partner of one of the largest Bulgarian digital marketing agencies, and I am teaching classes to over 4 000 students per year).
Waiting for vol.2 of Great Mental Models :)

So poorly narrated that nothing lands or sticks

I bought this audio book based on reading a first chapter, which read well and sounded interesting. Sadly, the audio book is narrated by the author, who barely takes a breath between sentences and it is hard to determine where one idea ends and another begins. As a result I have listened to several chapters and not even realised we had moved on to another ‘Great’ mental model or even fully comprehended the value of the previous one. I think this would have been a more enjoyable listen if the publisher had simply used an AI narrator.

a great framework for straight thinking

This book gives you a clear idea of how to make informed choices, I've already listened to it twice.

Very good book

Great book and looking forward to the next volumes. Only think that the narration was a bit fast and somewhat sounded monotonous. Still "listenable" but it would benefit from a more paused narration.

Not so clear

Narration is not always so clear. The stories are good, but the writer may want to use occam's razor principle to simplify them).

An interesting, if shallow, introduction.

Covers a few statistical and logical models to highlight why models are useful. Some good anecdotal examples to aid with recall, which is probably more appropriate for an audiobook than detailed examination.
I felt a little short-changed, but not a bad way to spend a few hours.
