Summary
But Esperanza is no ordinary servant. She has been sent by her guardian, the mysterious Madame de l'Orme, to uncover the dark and dangerous secrets that her new mistress has sought to conceal, and to set right a past injustice in which Esperanza's own closest interests are bound up.
Gradually those secrets are revealed, and with them the truth of who Esperanza really is, forcing agonising obligations on her, and enmeshing her in a complicated web of intrigue, deceit and murder that culminates in betrayal by those she trusted most.

Enjoyable but.......
Very enjoyable to listen to, and very well narrated. The story was Victorian gothic with some elements of Dickens, in particular the ‘comic’ lower class characters, with their odd names and strange appearance and mannerisms, which felt rather dated and unappealing to me in this day and age!

A compelling listen
The Glass of Time is beautifully read and I would have loved to have known who the main readers were. The reader for Ezmeralda was wonderful and really helped to convey the character.
Although long, it was strangely compelling, with several twists along the way. It's quite Dickensian but in a similar genre to Wilkie Collins, 'The Women in White.' The detail and scene setting are carefully drawn reflecting the skill of Michael Cox.
I hadn't realised that there was a prequel but I will be looking out for this.

Keeps you constantly gripped
This is a wonderfully rewarding listen and keeps you constantly gripped. I might advise starting with The Meaning of Night, and going straight on The Glass of Time because I certainly had some difficultly in remembering the plot details of the previous book. If you enjoy an enthralling tale with plenty of twists and turns in the plot, you will really enjoy this book.
