Summary

He's the best man...and that's the problem.

Kristen Petersen is perfectly fine. She has friends she'd fight to the death for and the very best dog in the world: Stuntman Mike. In fact, everything's calm in the world of Kristen, until she starts to plan her best friend's wedding and meets the best man, Josh Copeland.

Josh is funny, sexy, stands up to her sarcasm, and is always one snack ahead of her hangry. Even Stuntman Mike adores him. But he wants a big family, and Kristen knows children are probably not a part of her future.

She's sure he'd be better off with someone else, someone who can give him everything he wants, so Kristen keeps him at arm's length: in the Friend Zone. But as their attraction grows, it's harder and harder to resist falling for the man who seems to be everything she's not allowed to have....

The Friend Zone will have you laughing one moment and grabbing for tissues the next as it tackles the realities of infertility and loss with wit, heart and a lot of sass.

Perfect for fans of Christina Lauren, Helen Hoang, Sally Thorne, Jo Watson and Sophie Kinsella.

Critic reviews

"Harnessing sass, heartfelt struggle and unapologetic sexuality, Jimenez's debut is as hysterical as it is tear-jerking." (Publishers Weekly)

Frustrating, not my favourite Abby's book at all

I'm not sure this should be classed as a romantic comedy and I don't think the title fitted the story at all. From the title I was expecting something light-hearted, but it had a few fairly heavy themes that I wish I'd been more prepared for. I wasn't in the right frame of mind for them when I listened to this. I also agree with one of the other reviews that the OCD thing seemed like an afterthought and I don't think it added to the story at all, so it might as well not have been part of it. I've read the most recent Abby Jimenez books and really enjoyed them, but I think I might need to wait a while before I give the rear of this series a second chance.

So nearly 5 stars!

I was absolutely loving this book! I enjoyed the story telling and thought the themes of the book to be super important. I did find the very ending a bit predictable and it lost half a star for trying to add in about some OCD traits which I didn’t find believable and were annoying- it felt like an after thought.
4.5 stars, would recommend and I’m going to move straight on to the sequel!

Very good

I listened to this because I'd loved Part of your world by the same author. About half way, I was a little bit bored and was finding it all a bit predictable until, finally, something more dramatic happens with one of the characters. I saw it coming, but I still cried. It gave the story some 3 dimensionality and saved it. So, overall, I'd say it was a good book.

Hated it. Don’t read if you don’t want spoilers!

Josh likes Kristen because she’s not like other girls. She’s a cool girl, no drama, eats pizza and drinks beer 🥱 He only hangs around her waiting for her to split with her boyfriend so he can swoop in.

Kristen has to actively prevent herself from wanting to physically cheat with Josh (because she most definitely emotionally does) and pining about kids with him after a couple of weeks?!

The discussions around pregnancy were offensive to say the least. I thought we were over the whole women are only here to have babies thing. We go from her saying she’s not used protection for 8 years, lifetime of pain and considering a hysterectomy to having an IUD and getting pregnant after one time with Josh’s super sperm. Also, Josh wants 9 kids, 9!

Both characters are extremely unlikable. I’m so disappointed in this book.

This is the only Abby book I haven’t liked and in hindsight, of the 4 books I’ve read of hers, she can’t write a story without pregnancy being end game.
