Summary
Continuing the milestone 50th anniversary celebration of Star Trek - a brand-new novel of The Original Series featuring James T. Kirk, Spock, and the crew of the USS Enterprise!
Investigating a series of violent raids by a mysterious predatory species, Captain James T. Kirk discovers that these events share a startling connection with the First Federation, a friendly but secretive civilization contacted early in the USS Enterprise's five-year mission. Traveling to the First Federation in search of answers, the Enterprise suddenly comes under attack from these strange marauders. Seeking refuge, the starship finds its way to the true home of the First Federation, an astonishing collection of worlds hidden from the galaxy beyond. The inhabitants of this isolated realm are wary of outsiders, and some accuse Kirk and his crew for bringing the wrath of their ancient enemy down upon them. When an attempt to stave off disaster goes tragically wrong, Kirk is held fully accountable, and Commander Spock learns there are even deeper forces that threaten this civilization. If Kirk and Spock cannot convince the First Federation's leaders to overcome their fears, the resulting catastrophe could doom them all!

The face of the unknown
Well I looked forward to reading this. But I found it a tad hard to swallow. The narration is great. The story is worth a listen or a read though. See what you think.

ABOUT TIME!
What made the experience of listening to The Face of the Unknown the most enjoyable?
The story is wonderfully compelling, set in the 4th season (wich never happened outside of the books , comics and fan shows) it sets the conclusion to one of the best original series episodes "The Corbomite Maneuver" where we finally get more of an insite to the First Federation and its member races
What other book might you compare The Face of the Unknown to, and why?
The way this book is narrated i would compare it to any of the Expanse novels by James S.A Corey or ANY of the books in the Star Trek series by Peter David.. both writing styles of those authors are are evident in this story and its nice to see a combination of the two styles blended together
What does Robert Petkoff bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
He excelently portrays the charchaters in theior voices most notably the principle cast members. but in this one i was especially impressed how he brought back to life Balok and his recreation of Walker Edmiston original version was incredibly close to accurate
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Thats a tough one as their could be many depending on the screenplay.
the book title sums it sums up the best for now though even in audio format
Any additional comments?
this is an incredibly gripping story and i havent seen any good star trek audro books from simon and shuster for years intill this past year with the legacies series. if you enjoyed those your gonna love this story.. Bravo and i want more adaptations i will happily pay :)

Great book... Fun like the original series.
Great book... Fun like the original series.
I liked the narrator a lot, really does excellent job on the voices. Story is good, enough action in keeping with the
"we come in peace, shoot to kill" motto ;-) I loved the tv series and the books a great addition, I will def listen to the 2 follow up books... I would also add, don't expect a deep story, its star trek true to the original, and super well read..

Great book.
If you're a Trekkie, you'll love book. Robert Petkoff is superb at narrating it. You would be forgiven in thinking that the original characters were voicing that parts.

Excellent representation of star trek
This felt like a epic movie version of the traditional old school Star Trek the original series brought to life with an amazing story and a fantastic narrator. I was very impressed with the return to one of the old episodes. In fact there were multiple references to different episodes throughout the story making it feel like it was one of the original series run. The characterisations was spot-on and I really enjoy the insight with Spock and how they had Kirk try to tame his wild side.
Oh and Sulu was just fun

Good Trek
Funny moments, interesting characters, unique setting, one last chance to save a world. And of course Petkoff nails it like always.

i was bored!
It starts so well. The premise and setting are both great, but then a great wolloping action scene happens. Im sure the intention was that the story should be exciting, but if everything is crisis chapter after chapter it just becomes boring. I was bored and very nearly gave up.

Too much description not enough story
The storyteller was good but the story was so full of description instead of story line . There were parts where I had been listening for an hour and the actual storyline had not moved on one bit. There were times when you found yourself shouting "Oh get on with it, get to the point" The storyline good idea but the content was bogged down with too much description not enough meat to the story.
Story well read but poor content. I could listen to this guy read a telephone book.
