About this listen

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Fall: The Crimson Shadow comes a compelling and suspenseful tale of politics and power set in the universe of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Elim Garak has ascended to Castellan of the Cardassian Union...but despite his soaring popularity, the imminent publication of a report exposing his peoples' war crimes during the occupation on Bajor looks likely to set the military against him. Into this tense situation come Dr. Katherine Pulaski - visiting Cardassia Prime to accept an award on behalf of the team that solved the Andorian genetic crisis - and Dr. Peter Alden, formerly of Starfleet Intelligence. The two soon find themselves at odds with Garak and embroiled in the politics of the prestigious University of the Union, where a new head is about to be appointed. Among the front-runners is one of Cardassia's most respected public figures: Professor Natima Lang. But the discovery of a hidden archive from the last years before the Dominion War could destroy Lang's reputation.

As Pulaski and Alden become drawn into a deadly game to exonerate Lang, their confrontation escalates with Castellan Garak - a conflicted leader treading a fine line between the bright hopes for Cardassia's future and the dark secrets still buried in its past.

Very well read

The plot was an interesting one and should appeal to DS9 fans wondering what happened to Cardassia post dominion war. Could have been a deeper plot and more explanation in the narrative in places but entertaining enough! And manages to weave in Polaski from TNG too with hints to cannon events littered about. Very well read by Robert. Man has a very convincing Cardassian accent.. almost typical of Demarr! For Cardassia!

Garek at his best.

This is a great example of how to expand a universe. This book is full of schemes, misdirection and intrigue. What more could you want from a Garek book?

enigmas abound.

the character of Elim Garik is a favorite of mine, and placing him opposite the redoubtable Dr Polanski is brilliant, both having a foil worthy of their steel. Great story brilliantly voiced by Robert Petkoff.

This book did the impossible

This book did the impossible, it made me LIKE Polaski! I hated her on TNG, entirely because she was mean to Data (no one is allowed to be mean to my boy Data). But she's so great in this story, complex and grumpy and kind. And when she brings Bashir his teddy bear 😭😭😭 I absolutely loved getting a look at a reconstructed Cardassia, seeing Garek with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Clearly there's context from previous books that I'm missing, but it didn't detract from the story itself.

I really enjoyed this book

This was a great book. it's been very well read. Garak has grown a lot as a character and his relationship with Bashir has been explored nicely contrasted against the events of his life now

Good, but wanted more!

Enjoyed and would recommend! Just wanted some actual interaction between Julian and Garak! However, still worth reading as it Garak is such a good character to keep on developing.

Great book, great performance!

I had so much fun listening to this. The book is well written and engaging - if you like worldbuilding and character studies it's probably for you. I'm a big Garak fan and all the scenes featuring him were a delight, but i was also pleasantly surprised by how much i liked some of the original Cardassian characters. The narrator was superb and really brought the text to life!
