Summary

An invitation to a mysterious theatrical performance changes the lives of two women in Adam Rapp’s riveting new audio play The Cube. Magda, an upper-class White woman, is shocked to the core by what she sees—and questions her complicity. Ruth, a Black woman who played a role in the show, is thrilled to be part of it—until she discovers her performance is all too convincing. Directed by Whitney White, a visceral and truly immersive audio experience that tackles issues of race, privilege, and cultural blindness.

Gripping and twisted

Very cool dark tale, narration was good.
As the story is so bizarre there wasn’t much guessing ahead, just had to listen to find out where it was going.

A Suspenseful Drama

This production is replete with twists and brilliantly crafted transformations that grapple with the ideologies of how the arts and upheaval can be strange bedfellows.

The graphic nature of this production brings the grittiness of a city like New York in the grip of a pandemic with the cheek and jowl of people living in echo chambers.

I felt drawn and repulsed in equal measure. All I can say is that this is a suspenseful drama.

Just didn’t like it

Probably one of the worst audiobooks I’ve listen to for a while. As a black woman I love listening to talks and audiobooks that highlight the topic of race. However this wasn’t well written and was very 2D and crass at points.

Narration good, story moronic

Started well, despite the implausible premise. But I gave up after the miscarriage in a box to ward off evil.

Weak and directionless

I don’t like leaving poor reviews but this just felt like someone had an idea for a single scene and tried to build a story around it which didn’t really work. It felt like it was trying to be clever, but it just had no substance. Normally I like something that leaves you wondering and coming to your own conclusions but I don’t think this was one of those times. 2 1/half hours of my life will never get back. Good performances though.
