Dark Masterpiece.

I watched some of this story on television and was desperate to know what happened at the end. It was also really interesting hearing the difference between the screen version and the authors written word. Both were superb. I listened to the whole book almost without pause. Brilliant!!

Compulsive, brutal, honest

A real page turner despite periods of repetitiveness. I felt ambivalent whilst reading it and as much so now it comes time for review. It is beautifully written which is what I suspect is so captivating - it’s honest and accurate depiction of reality in Victorian London fascinating and distasteful in equal measure. Couldn’t stop reading even when bogged down in ‘had enoughness’. A poorly written review, but I am struggling to know exactly what I feel about it (which is perhaps also why there are no other reviews yet on here) - but, yes, it was compelling

Long........long..........long read.

I can't believe that I actually listened to this to the end.
I've got very mixed feelings about the whole book. I think were it being read by someone else I might have given it up but the narrator did an excellent job apart from a few dodgy attempts at accents. I found it quite entertaining listening to expletives being spoken in a posh accent but being from northern England anyone south of Birmingham sounds posh 😀
It is beautifully written and I've learned a few more words on the way but overall it seemed like a very drawn out mini drama, strangely, it never seemed to drag. I don't think that I would have liked to have read the actual book though as there just wasn't enough interest. And beware, the ending left me feeling like I'd just wasted 42 hours of my time. It's abrupt, rushed and rather inconclusive.
Not bad though.

Brilliant!

Awwww what a fantastic story...I’ve been engrossed in this from start to finish. I’ve never experienced a book that involves you (the reader) so much it’s very clever...abrupt ending but in a way I think that’s also very clever & how it should have ended as I wouldn’t have been able to imagine another one!
Also narrated perfectly by Jill Tanner ...I’m only sorry I have finished it now & hope my next read will be just as good.

Victoriana

Beautifully written and highly accomplished, but more to be admired than enjoyed. Certainly the book could have achieved the same effect whilst being half the length. The narration is excellent.

Brilliant story that draws you into its very depths

An amazing story which literally takes you into the squalor of London life and inequalities in a heart wrenching story line. The narration was absolutely astounding and the characters came to life through the wonderful descriptive text and brilliant narration. Would highly recommend.

Loved everything apart from the ending!

When you have invested 40+ hours in a book a better ending is deserved. Performance was excellent!

Amazing

Not for the fainthearted but a fascinating read.!
Well worth purchasing and totally fascinating.
As mentioned here, the ending is a little sudden. But this may be a blessing in disguise as it left me wondering what might have happened.
