Summary

The nail-biting final chapter in The Lewis Trilogy, from the Sunday Times best-selling author of Coffin Road.

The new start.

Fin Macleod, now head of security on a privately owned Lewis estate, is charged with investigating a spate of illegal game-hunting taking place on the island.

The old friend.

This mission reunites him with Whistler Macaskill - a local poacher, Fin's teenage intimate, and possessor of a long-buried secret.

The final chapter.

But when this reunion takes a violent, sinister turn and Fin puts together the fractured pieces of the past, he realises that revealing the truth could destroy the future.

A great ending

This is a great novel well read. The drama is perhaps slightly less intense than the previous two books, but it still has its moments. It's a great listen, with evocative descriptions of Lewis and a good story. A fitting ending to a great trilogy.

If I could give this six stars I would

This book was a pure delight from start to finish. As I didn't know there were other books in the series and am also new to Peter May, I started with this book and, wow. I grew up in the Outer Hebridees for part of my childhood, not on Lewis, but the scenery, the people, the wind, the peat... the atmosphere - it's all there. The book is beautifully written but keeps suspense throughout with believable characters. The narration is also top notch and beautifully rendered. I can't praise this enough and am now reading the other books in the series and will definitely try more Peter May!

Thrilling

The way the book was narrated was so brilliant, it brought the story alive. I have been to a lot of the places mentioned so it makes it all the more real. Excellent.

A good trilogy of three great stand alones.

A good finale to the trilogy, maybe a little less descriptive of Lewis itself than the first two (the descriptions were one of the things that struck me most about the first books) but by this point the reader is already familiar with the surroundings and almost starts to feel at home there.

The plot itself was enjoyable, possibly a little more laboured than the first two, but I found myself frustrated by the introduction of important elements of Fin's life and past that felt added on at this late stage to enable the plot to function. Also things that felt very important to Fin in the other books felt a little sidelined and glossed over so the works, as a trilogy maybe felt a little less cohesive as they could have done.
