SHORTLISTED FOR THE HWA DEBUT CROWN AWARD

As featured on Graham Norton's Book Club

Narrated by the soul of an enslaved African woman, this is a searing debut novel about hope, redemption and the scars of history.

Over 200 years ago in Africa, a woman tosses her young son to safety as she is hauled away by slavers. After a brutal sea passage, her second child, a baby girl, is snatched away. Although the woman doesn’t know it yet, her spirit is destined to roam the earth in search of her lost children.

Her spirit will make its way to modern-day England, where she watches teenage Michael trying to stay out of trouble as riots spit and boil on the streets of Brixton, and to a sun-baked village in Nigeria, where Ngozi struggles to escape her low-caste status.

As the invisible threads that draw these two lives together are pulled ever tighter, The Book of Echoes asks: how can we overcome the traumas of the past when they are woven so inextricably with the present? Humming with horror and beauty, Rosanna Amaka’s remarkable debut marks her as a vibrant new voice in fiction.

"A searing, rhapsodic novel. The Book of Echoes is filled with beauty, devastation and the power of ancestral connections that ripple through the ages." (Irenosen Okojie)

Moving

Brilliant, haunting, beautiful and so real. It was at times so sad and so painful and yet I trusted the author to deliver my heart to a very safe and fulfilling place.
Incredibly well read too…

Wow ! Great concept Echos

Really Interesting read this book revealed insights to some realities of everyday life in parts of UK, Nigeria, some of which continue to this day in UK, Nigeria and indeed other parts of the world.

These Injustice and atrocities occur on a regular.
I found this book educational on some Igbo cultures and tradition.

just brilliant

Highly reccommended, the scope and depth of the storyline weaves complex historical and personal events into a "not to be put down", but deeply instructive story.

Weruche Opia's performance as reader is inspired and deserves mores more stars than are possible to award. I chose this book purely on the basis of her as reader, having listed to a previous one of hers, and wasn't disappointed.

The Book of Echoes

A real story filled with tragedy from enslaved trafficking, intra generational trauma, loss of innocence and hope! The narrative reflects real struggle and oppression, many of which unites and connects the parallel stories so beautifully. The resilience of the prominent characters proves to be inspirational and shows the true scope and power of hope as they become who they want to be.
