About this listen

When a question of inheritance turns fatal, Miss Silver searches for the killer.

Jenny has never been one to feel sorry for herself. The illegitimate child of a wealthy man and a statureless woman, she has been an orphan since before she can remember. It is a hard life made bearable only by the kindness of her guardian, an old woman named Miss Garstone, who has always treated Jenny as her own. Struck down by a motorist, "Garsty" dies, whispering to Jenny that her parents were actually married, and she is the rightful heir to the Alington fortune. Miss Garstone was not the only one who knew the secret, and as Jenny grieves, her wealthy cousins work to protect their fortune. When the quiet conflict turns deadly, governess-turned-detective Miss Silver is the only one who can unravel the perplexing family saga.

Interesting Storey

I enjoyed this performance of the Patricia Wentworth book. I’ve been ploughing my way through her audio books after finding one of her books at my mothers house when clearing it out. They are just as good as Agatha Christie for the stories and Diana Bishop is a good narrator. They would make good films if anyone wanted to make one or a series. On to the next one now.

The plot is a bit contrived but a good listen

The narrator is good and this is a less wordy story than some so easy to listen too. The plot is not great and there is no suspense as the reader knows ‘whodunnit’ but it’s still an enjoyable listen if you like this style of book. And I do!

Brilliant as ever!

Miss Silver and Diana Bishop! The very best in detective stories and wonderful narration. I never tire of listening to these stories.

Disappointing

Overly long and weirdly repetitive. There were no twists but the coincidences that did occur were fairy story ones. It was like a romantic story for young girls of an earlier period.
