Summary
Eve and Neil live in the beautiful Cumbrian town of Tarnside. After years of trying for a baby, they are in the final stages of adopting four-year-old Milly. They just have to pass the 'settling in' period - three months of living together as a family under watchful eyes - and then they can make it official.
For Eve, her heartbreak is nearly at an end. She now has this perfect little girl in her life, a little girl who calls her mummy. But Eve's dream of a happy family is fragile. Any hint of trouble and the adoption could collapse. One misunderstanding, one rumour, one accusation could smash Eve's family to pieces.

Well written, and feels very realistic.
This is another one I wasn't sure about. I think Eve certainly needed to be stronger towards the end, and I actually think she was a little selfish, not putting Milly first, instead thinking of her with her mother. The beginning annoyed me as well, as she did what she does after they hadn't spoken for 2 years. I didn't like Joan right from the start, and without writing any spoilers, I'm of the opinion that you won't either by the end. But as already stated, I parcially blame Eve for what happened, and I didn't like the way she acted through most of this. I was with Neil from page 1, and stayed there. If Eve had done what I think she should have, this wouldn't have happened. When Shona says, "more important than your mother's feelings," I thought, ha, you had that coming, serves you right! I wanted to hug Neil. That was the lowest of the low what happened to him. I was furious! Good plotline and writing, and I love how Wand made me feel emotions as if it was real, to me that shows a good author, but I think Eve was a really dislikeable character, and I loved Milly, I wanted to adopt her myself!

It’s far to slow
I thought from other reviews it would have lots of twists and turns like “the rumour”. Sadly the story is so slow and is more about adoption then a good mystery with twists. It does have a good twist but not until the end.
The narrator is really good though

What A Wet Sock!
I had to return this book. The main character Eve was driving me mad with her pathetic “I should have...” all the time. I wanted to scream “Well why the hell didn’t you then???”
I usually struggle on with a bad book as a matter of principle but I just couldn’t bear her any longer. The narration was ok, but I have no idea whether the storyline would have improved and I don’t care. It’ll come as no surprise that I wouldn’t recommend this one.
