Summary

The Times Audiobook of the Week.

The bodies never stay buried forever....

On a freezing winter morning, fishermen pull a body from the sea. It is quickly discovered that the dead man was the prime suspect in a decade-old investigation, when a prominent civil servant disappeared without trace. DCI Karen Pirie was the last detective to review the file and is drawn into a sinister world of betrayal and dark secrets. But Karen is already grappling with another case, one with even more questions and fewer answers.

A skeleton has been discovered in an abandoned campervan and all clues point to a killer who never faced justice - a killer who is still out there. In her search for the truth, Karen uncovers a network of lies that has gone unchallenged for years. But lies and secrets can turn deadly when someone is determined to keep them hidden for good....

The number one best seller and unrivalled queen of crime Val McDermid is back with her most exhilarating, breath-taking thriller yet.

Amazing as always!!

Just gets better & better haven’t slept much as I couldn’t put it down. Also I’ve got to say that the narrator Cathleen McCarron did a fantastic job ! The only sad thing is I’ve listened to it & I really didn’t want it to end!

Sorry it’s ended

I have thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful series of 6 books and really hope there will be more. I’ve only recently got into Val’s books and loved the characters brought to life by Cathleen McCarrons’ narration. I do not understand the criticism of her accents or delivery. I lost count of how many different accents she effortlessly recounted for both male and female. Which for me completely compliments Val’s fabulous story telling. As far as the criticisms of, 'patronising, and political biases', I feel I'm intelligent enough to make up my own mind about these things. Institutions like the police, can be very 'masogenistic' , and so I am totally in favour of an intelligent and clever women being portrayed. I absolutely recommend to anyone male or female who love crime stories, especially when they get the baddies.

Annoying narrator

It took me a while to get into the book as the narrator’s sing-song voice really got on my nerves. I kept stopping and starting it, but the story was good enough for me to keep with it.

Will Not Disapoint ! ! !

This is another excellent book in the Karen Pirie series. I had planned to listen to it over a number of days but once I started I just couldn't stop and so finished it in a day.
I'd made the mistake of reading the reviews beforehand and for a minute got taken in by the negative talk about the narration. Thankfully I got my head back in gear and remembered that I'd listened to all the previous books in the series and all bar one had the same narrator. Cathleen McCarron is Karen Pirie as far as I'm concerned.

recommended

very enjoyable, easy listening and excellent narration . I often get annoyed with a woman trying to sound like. a man and vice versa, but in this case it was done extremely well

One of the best she's ever written

I've read a lot of Val Mcdermid over the years. The standard has always been high, but this book is one of her very best. Also, great to see her increasingly bringing some political commentary into the narrative at the margins.

Loved it but did crack the case before KP. This didn’t stop my enjoyment though.
