About this listen

The SUNDAY TIMES bestselling series continues…

Anna survived the attempt to bind her magic, but Anna and her coven aren’t free from danger yet.

Haunted by her aunt’s death, living in fear of her curse, and fated to love the one man she can never have, the last thing Anna needs is a witch hunt. Now she must conceal her magic once more or risk losing everything.

But when deadly hysteria strikes across the capital, and in her own school, the coven are left dangerously exposed. Delving deeper into the magical underworld of London, Anna and her twin sister Effie must find a way to work together to protect the coven.

But as the witch hunt intensifies and the hysteria spirals out of control, can Effie and Anna truly trust each other?

Just brilliant!

Such an incredible world that Cari Thomas has created. The characters are colourful and vivid. It’s a twisting and turning tale full of drama.

Immature performance

It was a disappointing book. The plot was slow until the last 10 chapter and the performance was played very immaturely and made it hard to listen to

Better than average

I enjoyed the first one and had high hopes for this sequel, but by 15hrs or so it felt in need of a good edit. Parts of the story fully held my attention and were entertaining, but a lot was extraneous and puts me off a second listen.

Fun but nothing new

This story is pretty derivative, but as I enjoyed both The Craft and Harry Potter, (the most unmistakeable influences here), growing up, this was still a fun listen for me. I think the narration was very good and matched the writing style perfectly: it is juvenile and melodramatic; it's a young adult book, (I assume, although it does read like it's set in the early 2000s, which I don't think is intentional?), and I think it's enjoyable for what it is.

Disappointing

I loved Thread Needle and Hedge Witch, but this one took way too long to get interesting. The first half of the book is too slow for me. The second half picks up and it is enjoyable and interesting, but not enough to make up for the first half of the book. The narration is ok, but there were a couple of words that were consistently and frustratingly either mispronounced, or pronounced in an odd way. I had been anticipating this book so much and I’m sad I didn’t love it.

Overdramatic

I read book 1 and 2 back to back. This was a good follow up book but felt that the characters were more annoyingthis time around. Maybe this was the narration style but, they all seemed extra petulant and whiny. Rowan was particularly disappointing, she came across as fun in book 1 but this one she just sounded as whiny as the rest. I get they're teenage girls, but we're supposed to at least like the coven. I sometimes had to turn the book off because Anna's shrill moments were killing my ears.
Solid sequel, some dark and amusing moments, but narration didn't need to go that hard. A bit overdramatised this time around.

Not an easy listen.

I had to dnf about halfway through. Sadly the narrator made my toes curl and set me on edge to the point that I realised I wasn’t enjoying the experience at all and turned to the physical book instead.
The character’s voices were read as extremely sullen, bitchy or whiny. I felt it made an untrue representation of them and was very grating. Listening to a audiobook shouldn’t feel like an uncomfortable chore.
My advice is to read the book yourself.
