Summary
A young heroine learns that, when you hide in the shadows, something darker may be waiting there for you . . . as the fantasy adventure saga continues.
Having discovered her true heritage, young Gatina is embracing her evolving role as an apprentice shadowthief. It turns out procuring things that don’t actually belong to you can be rather exciting. But the first thing a good thief must learn is how to not get caught. If the evil usurper Count Vichetral snares Gatina or her beloved family, a truly unpleasant fate awaits.
So her defiant father has deposited Gatina and her brother in the last place Vichetral’s men would think to look for them: stately Palomar Abbey. Under the alias of Maid Avorrita of Dentran—a purposely dull, bucktoothed maiden studying to be a novitiate—Gatina quickly comes to enjoy her new life among the elite. And then the trouble truly begins . . .
When Gatina’s father takes her along with him to Inmar to meet a fence who can handle their stolen goods, they discover a new threat to their Shadow Council: the checkered-cloaked Royal Censorate of Magic, dedicated to the ruthless enforcement of centuries-old laws pertaining to the use of magic. Later, Gatina’s dormant rajira unexpectedly emerges at the abbey, and she’s secretly tutored in shadowmagic by the mysterious Lady Silva.

Great story, Kitten is an engrossing character
the story is great, and is tiding me over whilst waiting for the next main spellmonger book. fascinating to learn more about kitten and am looking forward to the next.
the narrator's enunciation is stunning for the most part, apart from a few pronunciations that to my ears gate a bit. maGG-ockracy rather than madge-OCKracy, and majE rather than mayGe, but these are really really few. would listen to the narrator do other stories

Great book, still mispronounced words
A great book and good narrating like the first but as with the last book many names and places were mispronounced based on the main series. This really takes away from the story when listening particularly Magogracy. It really would make a huge difference when emerced in the fantasy.

Great sidestory to learn more about some characters
This sidestory is almost as good as the main spellmongerseries, and the main character is really interesting to follow.
Even think this is better than some of the main books.
Only minor issue is that voiceactors shold use the same names on places and words that the series have. Get confusing when you hear a new word, but it is an already established word just pronunced way different.
it is not something that make the experience any less enyojable

A truly fantastic performance for a great story! I'm so glad the pronunciations where corrected too. Fiona really put passion into the narration it was such a pleasure to listen to. Very highly recommend!

Shaping up well
I am usually wary of spin-off's but this one is shaping up into a very entertaining and engaging storyline. Ultimately we know how it will end but not exactly how they get there. Although it's about the family of shadow mages the main focus is Kitten, the precocious youngest child of the family. The story is full of adventure, colourful characters, exotic locals but also the coming of age of the two young siblings and their bond.
Great stuff, never dull, always thoughtful and well written and I can't wait for more.

Great second installment.
A strong follow up to shadowplay. The lore deepens around Gatina and Atopol and their parents, intriguing to find out how the adventures of Minalan and his fellow wizards influences the shadow book series.
I marked down the performance by a star as mid-way through a chapter a character's accent was changed by the narrator as was some pronunciation, presumably between two recording sessions.
I recommend the book.
