Summary

An Amazon Best Book of 2019

New York Times Best Seller

B&N's YA Book Club Pick

Indiebound Best Seller

Number Six on the 2019 Kids’ Indie Next List

"A brilliant debut, full of everything I love: a sparkling and fully realized heroine, an intricate and deadly system of magic, and a searing romance that kept me reading long into the night. Serpent & Dove is an absolute gem of a book." (Sarah J. Maas, number one New York Times best-selling author of the A Court of Thorns and Roses series)

Bound as one, to love, honor, or burn. Book one of a stunning fantasy duology, this tale of witchcraft and forbidden love is perfect for fans of Kendare Blake and Sara Holland.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

As a huntsman of the Church, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. But when Lou pulls a wicked stunt, the two are forced into an impossible situation - marriage.

Lou, unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, must make a choice. And love makes fools of us all.

Set in a world of powerful women, dark magic, and off-the-charts romance, book one of this stunning fantasy trilogy will leave listeners burning for more.

Holter Graham voice acting is YIKES terrible.

I was really looking forward to this audiobook and I was throughly enjoying myself until the male narrator chapters. His voice was annoying but he read incredibly fast and didn’t annunciate properly. There was no real characterisation from him which I don’t need in all my audiobooks but it was made more pronounced by just how GOOD Saskia Maarleverd (the female narrator) was!

It’s a real shame because the book is enjoyable but I would recommend just buying a kindle or physical copy of the book instead.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE

OMG I LOVED THIS BOOK!

I love these two narrators so when I first started listening to this book I was already hooked. If you haven't listened to books by these two then you are seriously missing out! These two make this story even more magical than it already was!

The book is written from 2 POV, Lou and Reid. Lou is read by Saskia and Reid by Holter. I raced through this book. I was absolutely hooked. Lou is very funny and so is Reid without knowing it. This book is full of unexpected love, friendships and magic.

It's addictive and easy to read. It's a light fantasy which focuses on the romance as well as the magic. I liked that there were different types of witches yet the guard were so unaware of the differences. I thought the exchange system was interesting and makes a witch think about if using magic is worthwhile. It shows that everything has consequences.

This book is very well written and thought out. It's surprising that this is Shelby's debut as it reads much more like a seasoned author. I can tell that Shelby is going to be a favourite for me for years to come. I cannot wait for the next book which is not out until September!

The male narrator’s voice is very annoying

I’m only a few chapters in and am enjoying the story so far, cliche and unremarkable though it is, but the chapters narrated by the man are difficult to listen to because his voice is really annoying. The female narrator is great.

Highly recommended

The female voice actor is perfect in every way, the male speaks a little to fast and his female interpretation is a little funny.

Enthralling

Was slow at first, but then absolutely unputdownable. Performance broke my immersion occasionally, though.

A bit of a slow starter.

I love Saskia Maarleveld's voice! I think she has such a great vocal range and brings her characters to life so well - so I had high hopes for this book!
Initially, I found the story a little slow and at times a little confusing. I couldn't discern the setting fully, and I felt like maybe there had been a prequel..... however this all cleared up further on.
The story has some predictable moments - as does most YA fiction - but there are several unexpected turns and twists. The way the author describes magic is mesmerising - the idea of gold patterns glittering in the air is beautiful - and I really appreciated the presence of a cost to using magic and often a high one.
Overall I did enjoy the story and I found myself eagerly downloading the second part of the trilogy. I have developed a bit of a soft spot for Ansell, and Reid is just adorable too with his priggish sensibilities and his emerging foul mouth! Looking forward to the next part.

entertaining

I enjoyed the story. Pretty entertaining and perfect for Halloween season. The story is a little slow to get started but becomes quite engaging. I think now that this tale had kicked off properly I hope the next one will keep up the momentum. The quality of the Audio is good and the narration is good. especially Saskia Maarleveld who is the dominant Narrator. She is always amazing.

Only if your main reason for reading is opposite attract romance

Not for me. The reason for the marriage was unfortunately too contrived for me. I didn’t enjoy the narrators interpretation and unfortunately felt that nothing much happened for a large portion of the book. I’m afraid I gave up after the 7th hour.
