Summary

Saturday afternoon: you're with the kids in the garden when the phone rings. It's your best friend from school. Someone you haven't seen for a few years. It should be a friendly call catching up on old times. But it's not. This call is different. Your friend is panting with fear, his breaths coming in tortured, ragged gasps. Someone is inflicting terrible pain on him. He cries out and then he utters six words that will change your life forever...the first two lines of your address.

Fast-paced but awfully read

Relentless is a very apt title. The action doesn't let up from start to finish.
I'm sure I would have enjoyed the book more had it been read by a competent reader.
Paul Thornley's performance lacks variety and inventiveness and is flat and drab.
I will be avoiding books read by him in the future.

Brilliant! Found another author!

Any additional comments?

A quiet start belies an urgent story. The narrator adopted such an "ordinary" voice for the main victim which contrasted so well with the menace of the criminals. A lot of twists and turns - some red herrings, kept me guessing to the end. It is good to find another author of this genre to follow.

Great Story

I bought this solely because it was read by Paul Thornley, I am a big fan of the Paul Finch, Heck books read by Paul, and was not disappointed.
It's a great story, fast-moving, twists all the way, well worth the money.

Pacy, gripping read

Really enjoyed this fast paced thriller with a satisfying ending. The central detective is a sympathetic and complex character. Look forward to reading/listening to more books by this author, who is new to me.

What a great listen!

This is the first of Simon Kernick's books I have listened to - what a find! I had read other reviews and liked the sound of it. It is fast paced, and a little unusual, if you like a thriller, but with the main characters rather understated, then this is for you. There were also a few times where I had to laugh out loud. Recommended

Great story

But sadly let down by the narration. The main thread of the story is about someone ( the main character ) whose loved one is in grave danger, very possibly murdered and I’m afraid his character is portrayed as far too lighthearted as to be convincing

Shades of Hitchcock

I was initially put off by the attitude of the main protagonist, Tom. As he was held at gunpoint, bundled into the back of a car etc. his attitude seemed somewhere between indignant and whimsical. Then I was reminded of Cary Grant in North By Northwest, also an ordinary bloke going about his business suddenly finding himself on the run from police and baddies at the same time for reasons he didn't understand, but still managed some humour. N by NW was a good movie, so I let myself enjoy this story and suddenly it became a much better book.
Fast paced book, lots of action. Just as you think things are getting wrapped up, off it goes again with fresh rounds of intrigue.
Maybe not much literary genius here, but a cracking good story, lots of car chases both literal and metaphoric, even a love angle. Good use of first person for Tom and third person elsewhere to give us a wider perspective. Good narration by Paul Thornley. I think he used the intonations that the writer intended.
The 10 hour 7 min running time included 30 minutes of interview with the author - so the story stopped abruptly 30 minutes before I was expecting it to!

Performance enhanced this novel

The story is not bad, but bad at all, but neither it is stellar.
The main character is an average person who suddenly finds himself in a dark, dangerous world he's not accustomed to be a part of.
A bit of marital drama ensues.

Quirky Thriller

A very English thriller, which was a bit quirky but enjoyable. Preferred this to 'A good day to die' which did not have any likeable characters in it.
