When former detective Ted Conkaffey is wrongly accused of abducting a teenage girl, he hopes the Queensland town of Crimson Lake will be the perfect place to disappear.
But nowhere is safe from the girl’s devastated father. Dale Bingley plans to take brutal revenge – and if Ted can't find the real abductor, he’ll be the first casualty.
Meanwhile, on the beer-soaked floor of a nearby roadside shack, two young bartenders lie dead. As the homicide investigation unravels, Ted and his unlikely ally private detective Amanda Pharrell are brought in to assist on the case.
While Ted fights to clear his own name, their hunt for the killer draws them into a violent dance with evil.
They have one shot at redemption. It just might cost them their lives…

Very Different
Absolutely loved this story, it is so different from the usual detective fiction It took me a wee while to get used to the style of storytelling and the narrator, but once I got into the story and warmed to the narrator's gruff voice, I was hooked. The main character, ex-police officer Ted, has been wrongly and cruelly accused of a ghastly crime committed on an underage girl, though never convicted, and now it's a case of "no smoke without a fire" as he tries to clear his name. He's a big kind teddy bear of a man who's fled to the far north of Australia to try and find some peace, where he does some private detective work with Amanda, a time-served murderer (yes, it's complicated, but fun!).
The story is sad in places, and laugh-out-loud in others, and makes for a really good listen. I enjoyed it so much I'm now listening to the latest in the series, and loving it, too.
Missed the first book in the series, but look forward to listening to that next!

A well performed, but luke warm sequel
Follows on from the first book. I felt there were some plot holes for me between this and the original. Performance was excellent.
