Summary
Set in a small town of the industrial North of England in the late 1950s, this is a feel-good story about the antics of a young man's attempt to make something of himself with a little help from the lads in his yard.
Thwarted with bad luck and inexperience, their journey of persistence never to miss an opportunity through the hardships of the time will make you smile.

A Book Full Of Giggles
As a child from the 50s it was easy for me to picture everything in this very amusing story. My husband kept asking what I was giggling at so I bought the book for him to read. He says it is very entertaining.
I will add that the narration on Audible is excellent.

Genuinely heart warming
I loved this book and coming from and working in the area of Yorkshire this is set I immediately started to recognise the settings and the people. Very funny in places with very deliberate phrases to cause laughter, I’ll not forget that lady in Lincolnshire who hadn’t had her bush trimmed in many a long year… you need to read it to understand.

Entertaining
An entertaining story of rags to riches with Northern charm and a bit of high jinx. I wasn't really sure whether I would like the book but it kept me engaged so much that I listened to all of the book in one sitting.

A Top Story of Northern Life.
Where do you start. I first came across the book a couple of years ago. It took me straight back to my childhood. My dad stripped buses for a while. I have read it from time to time, it always takes me back. By the first two chapter's their is tragedy. The lad soon grows into a man, due to the tragedy he comes into some money. This is the start of his journey.
I came across the audible version a month ago. It took me right back to my youth. The narrator comes across very well, I can see the story happening in my mind. Having listened a couple of times, I find myself as part of the story. I will say this, the audible version is just as good as the book.
Enjoy
Geoffrey Harrison.
