Get Mark Billingham's pulse-racing new Tom Thorne thriller, The Murder Book, now!

My name is Alice. I'm a police officer. I'm trying to solve a murder on a psychiatric ward. But I'm also a patient.

They were meant to be safe on Fleet Ward: psychiatric patients monitored, treated, cared for. But now one of their number is found murdered, and the accusations begin to fly. Was it one of his fellow patients? A member of staff? Or did someone come in from the outside?

DC Alice Armitage is methodical, tireless, and she's quickly on the trail of the killer.

The only problem is, Alice is a patient too.

I enjoyed this. there are a few holes in the story

for example the things that just would never be allowed to happen in a home such as this ( I worked in supported living for 10 years) But the characters are great, there's some very funny moments and many poignant ones regarding just how easy it is to become mentally unwell unless it's tackled head on. so bravo to the author for that. I feel though I wouldn't have enjoyed it anywhere near as much had it been narrated by anyone other than the marvellous Maxine Peak.

Darkly twisted

Really enjoyed this, darkly comic ,twisting tale . A murder mystery where the murder is kind of incidental to the story......but also absolutely fundamental.
To make sense of this statement, you will just have to read it....or....listen to a fantastic reading on Audible

Far too long

I really wanted to like this book and for the first few hours I did - having been somewhere very much like fleet ward and met some similar characters, Billingham’s descriptions made me chuckle. Unfortunately I then found it dragged and I stopped listening completely with 5hrs still to go.

Adored Maxine's portrait of Alice

became completely sucked into this story and despite my usual preference to have men reading, loved Maxine's portrait of Alice. if it had been a book/book...I'd have struggled to put it down.

Brilliant narration of average story

Maxine Peake is stunning and creates a wholly believable character. The first half of the book is brilliant but I lost interest after half way as it was just more of the same. Not a satisfying conclusion either.

I loved the funera episode. Billingham and Peake are a good combo

A very very unusual thriller

Was slightly taken aback when I started listening, it’s definitely outside Mark Bellingham’s usual range. Maxine Peake reads very well,, but it takes a while to get used to the accent.

All I can say, is, try it. It’s a bit like Marmite.

Fabulous!

One of the most original crime novels I’ve read in many years. Every box ticked for me. Story, pace, dialogue, characterisation and plot. There’s something very satisfying about knowing you have an unreliable narrator but one you still trust. It’s clever and must have been a hell of a challenge to write! And I couldn’t think of anyone who could have narrated this better. Five stars!!

Pretty poor

Took me ages to read and was disappointed to say the least. There was hardly any content. I apologise for this review

Billingham is always good...

but this was brilliant. yes it must have been tough to write as he gets into her head. The emotion made you believe it was being told by Al herself. Most excellent performance. Thanks to both Mark and Maxine.
