Summary
ALL KILLERS WANT TO MAKE THE FRONT PAGE...
It was supposed to be a simple case: a young man arrested for armed assault.
But it was just the beginning.
As Rodney Middleton awaits trial, Detective Jack Warr is warned by his mentor DCI Ridley that they have only scratched the surface of the man's crimes.
Then DCI Ridley is suddenly removed from his post. No one is to contact him - and no one will say why.
As Warr digs into Middleton's past, Ridley calls pleading for help, now accused of a murder he insists he didn't commit.
To catch a monster and exonerate his friend, Warr must weed out the lies. But what awaits Warr if he uncovers the truth?

formulaic
It kept my interest but didn't develop the story line or characters enough . It was rather formulaic , typical of Ms La Plante's books.

The complex story
It was a good story with likeable good characters and evil criminals.
I really liked the narrators voice and speed he read. Also had sub plots and lots of crime detail

Anger Issues
For me to really enjoy a book I have to like the main character.
In the previous books I've found Jack difficult, but I've not disliked him. I did in this book.
His aggression and know it all attitude weren't a good mix and the disfunction of his family life was off putting, in fact social services might need a call.
The case the team are working on is interesting and I feel Jacks issues took away from the plot.
Also the other case Jack is working on lost its lustre because of the same issues.
Both could be so much more and should have been what dominated the book.

Excellent book
Brilliant story and narrator. As well as having a crime scene we also delved into family life of the other detectives and Jack the main character. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

As good as the rest of the series
To understand some of the behaviour in certain characters in this book, and to understand some of the relevance of parts of the story, you would need to read the previous three books. This doesn’t stand alone.
The whole series has been excellent and this book is no different. The narrator is excellent, on the whole.
I was surprised at the ending because it left loose threads, one from book 3. There seem to be no plans at the moment for a fifth book. I hope there will be one soon, because I want more answers, and if we’re not given one soon, my poor memory will spoil it for me. But the series does need at least one more book.
