About this listen

A Sunday Times best seller

The thrilling first Dirk Pitt classic from multi-million-copy king of the adventure novel, Clive Cussler.

Fully armed and with all hands onboard, the nuclear submarine Starbuck sailed into the calm Pacific Ocean for sea trials - and vanished. No wreckage, no signals, no survivors: nothing...until ace maritime troubleshooter Dirk Pitt finds a single chilling clue in the shark-torn surf off Hawaii - the log of the Starbuck.

'Do not search for us, it can only end in vain....'

A crazed journal of madness and death is all that remains. And the captain's final scrawled, fear-crazed note locates the Starbuck's grave hundreds of miles from her last known position! The search for the Starbuck plunges Dirk Pitt into his most shattering assignment to date - a whirlpool of deep-sea mystery and terror - the Pacific Vortex!

Loads of fun!

I really like all the characters, I enjoy the writing. My brain isn't taxed but there's enough going on to keep me interested.

Clive Cussler at his best.

Dirk Pitt. A wonderful character. One of Clive's best. Pitt, a man of his time.

Of its time!

A "ripping yarn" but too much #metoo for me to actually enjoy it! Soooo sexist! Women there merely to be naked and lithe and "wearing a caftan that barely brushed her hips" - gah!

brilliant!

I'd long avoided the Dirk Pitt novels - thinking they were all based at sea, generally the same sort of plot etc etc etc.
Well, I was very wrong, and I never should have doubted Clive Cussler.. Pacific Vortex was superb. A really intriguing plot line, some great characters, and a lead hero which I think I can really like.
I thoroughly recommend Pacific Vortex, and I'm looking forward to getting to grips with the rest of this series!
Great narration from Scott Brick.

Entertaining, but predictable

As always this was another top notch story from Clive Cussler. A very entertaining listen, with a bit of a predictable ending.

REALLY GOOD STORY

Really enjoyed listening to the book, and love the story.
Text is a little bit dated concerning women but given that the story is set in the 70s/80s, that can be forgiven.

So if you're a feminist and easily offended by the way women are portrayed in the books that are set in the 70s then this book is not for you.

But if you want to to listen to a really good story and appreciate the writing of Clive Cussler then this is well worth a listen.
Brilliantly read by Scott Brick who gives each character their own voice and personality.

Meh!

Story was OK but not very believable. But I disliked it mainly because of all the clichéd macho bullshit.

Perfect

clive cussler writes the perfect story. he is one of my top favourite authors. his stories are based on a 'fact'. they have great characters. the pace is spot on...
and scott brick does full justice to these stories with his sonorous voice.
