About this listen

When an experimental starship test goes horribly wrong, a test pilot from Earth is flung across the galaxy and crash lands on the planet of a powerful alien king.

Pilot Mallory West is having a really bad day. She’s crashed on an alien planet, her ship is in pieces, and her best friend Poppy, the scientist monitoring the experiment, is missing. Dazed and injured, she collapses into the arms of a big, silver-eyed warrior king. But when her rescuer cuffs her to a bed and accuses her of being a spy, Mal knows she has to escape her darkly tempting captor and find her friend.

Overlord Rhain Zhalto Sarkany is in a battle to protect his planet Zhalto and his people from his evil, power-hungry father. He’ll use every one of his deadly Zhalton abilities to win the fight against his father’s lethal warlord and army of vicious creatures. Rhain suspects the tough, intriguing woman he pulls from a starship wreck is a trap, but when Mal escapes, he is compelled to track her down.

Fighting their overwhelming attraction, Mal and Rhain join forces to hunt down the warlord and find Poppy. But as Mal’s body reacts to Zhalto’s environment, it awakens dormant powers, and Rhain is the only one who can help her. As the warlord launches a brutal attack, it will take all of Mal and Rhain’s combined powers to save their friends, the planet, and themselves.

Great start to a new series!

This is the first in a series but Rhain was introduced in a prior book of this author's and since then, I've been waiting impatiently for his story. (the prior book is Weapon's Master, of the Galactic Gladiators House of Rone series and the whole series, including the predecessor, Galactic Gladiators, are must read or listen sci fi romance novels because of the awesome, smart and strong women, the alpha men who are swoon worthy, and the exciting plots and action.)

In this story, pilot (and amazing fighter), Mal, was testing a wormhole experiment and accidentally, ends up lost in space and within the realm of Rhain's world. He initially thinks she's an enemy spy and the sparks fly. What is interesting and what I hope becomes more clear in the future books of this series is the way Mal adapted to the world. It's an intricate and detailed aspect of the story that is really exciting because it made Mal such a strong character in the story. There's no weak human here, she starts and ends with kicking some alien bums so that she may save her fellow human traveler Poppy.

The story also sets up the future books in the series as Rhain's father is evil and trying to get his sons onto his side. Rhain has escaped this but there are still 2 brothers left. The next book will feature Brodin, his half brother and the emperor of another world. As I have already read the next book, I can say that the world continues to be fascinating and fun!

The story was only elevated by the narration by Vivienne Leheny and Stephen Dexter. Both played their parts so well and while Stephen dexter has a softer voice than I would have attributed to Rhain, his range is so great that I enjoyed the reading.

Good world building

A well written Sci-Fi fantasy with a good mix of aliens, creatures, magic romance but with average spice. However, I wasn't a fan of the end battle which wasn't very plausible.

Sexy overlord and No damsel in distress

I loved the narration of both male and female narrators. They didn’t take away from performance with switch overs. The female voice was low and I found her tone and pronunciations of her words rather easy to listen to. The male was just as awesome and they work quite well together. I liked some parts of the sorry, especially the banter refreshing. This was a strong female character and she was well written. The earthling on a new planet has been told a million times and in a million ways, I liked this one very much. I didn’t like the final battle scene. Some things didn’t add up. The diversion diverted so well, almost no one was left in the compound when they entered. I struggled to visualize what was happening, thats why I give the story 4 instead of 5.
Otherwise I do recommend it, the relationship and sex scene was very well developed.
Happy Listening

Gripping & Out of this World Amazing!

This is fantastic, out of this world, SciFi romance novel is captivating from start to end. It is my second book written by Anna Hackett, she is a gifted author with a wonderful writing style and it is great to see another side of her brilliant mind as she creates this imaginative and fascinating story and world filled with equally fascinating and imaginative characters, characters that are easy to relate to and connect with. Pilot Mallory “Mal” West is testing a new starship in outer space when she gets caught up in a wormhole and winds up crashing on an unknown planet that is galaxies away from Earth. She survives the crash, but the craft broke apart on impact and the half of the starship missing contained her only other passenger, her friend, Poppy, a scientist monitoring the experiment. Mal is frantic to find her but runs into trouble, a monstrous being that she needs to fight off, she in injured in the fight and winds up getting captured. She does not know what planet she is on or where in the universe she is. Overlord Rhain Zhalto Sakany is amidst a battle to protect his planet from his father, who has been sending monsters to attack his people. When he captured Mal, he did not know if she is working for his father, so she needed to be held until he finds out. But Mal is determined to find her friend, and no one is going to stop her, not even the Overlordship King. Rhain catches her soon after her escape, but he has bigger fish to fry first and she not only helps him, but she turns out to be a tremendous asset working by his side. It seems like the planet, Zhalto, agrees with Mal and she is adapting in several interesting ways. The chemistry between her and Rhain is electric and undeniable. I loved how everything played out in this book, it is an action packed, cleverly plotted story with plenty of drama, some angst, thrilling and suspenseful moments, heartfelt emotions and an out of this world, steamy, romance. Anna Hackett, thank you for the wonderful story, I am looking forward to what comes next in this amazing series and world you created.

🎧📚🎧 And for the fabulous narration, Vivienne Leheny and Stephen Dexter were the perfect cast to bring these characters and their story to life. They had a complete understanding of the characters they portrayed, gave each a voice that fit the character’s persona to a tee, sounding believable and just as I pictured the characters to sound. Vivienne Leheny’s Mallory was spot on, grasped both her her strength and badassery, Stephen Dexter nailed it as the great alpha-lord Rhain. Both were great at performing the roles of the secondary character as well. They set the perfect tone and pace for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and projected them into their performance. These versatile voice artists are entertaining storytellers are a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another great listen.

Quite quick nice forgettable with pro narrators

I was a bit surprised by the fantasy-like elements–some kind of magical power, and shifter aliens, for instance–mixed with the science fiction staples of spaceships and alien creatures. But, you know, the authors can do whatever they want with their world building.

As the first book in a new series, this one needed a whole lot of exposition. It wasn’t always subtle, but the fact that the main female character is human and has to learn about this new world, it mostly worked. The reader just does it at the same time. And so the author explains the time the characters live in, the special physics of the planet, the biological differences, and of course the politics.

The hostility between Rhain and his father is at the center of the story. It’s Rhain’s motivation, it’s also the reason why he doesn’t trust Mal at first. The war, and the enemie’s attacks, bear a few very intense action scenes, that highlight Rhain’s ruthlessness and Mal’s badassery.

In a way, it’s through violence that their love blooms. Sure, there’s instant attraction, but it’s when they fight that they look deeper into each other’s mind and heart. Mallory is brave and smart, and is ready to sacrifice herself for the innocents. Rhain is a strong leader who would do anything to help his people. They admire and respect each other, and that’s what bring them together in the end.

The fantasy-like elements kind of ruined the thrill though, in my opinion. The author uses magic to get the characters out of danger a few times. With magic, you can do anything. So I never feared for them. Too bad when the author needed to build some tension before a battle.

The romance is interspecies. Fortunately for Mal and Rhain, humans and Zhaltons are quite compatible, with a few differences that make the sexy scenes interesting–I mean, it was kind of hot, the way Rhain needed to learn how to please his woman. Besides that, it’s typical enemies to lovers stuff. The author even manages to write in some ‘boring’ happy ending by creating other similitudes between Zhaltons’ and humans’ culture. It was still cute, though.

The narration was good. I felt the female narrator was better at expressing Mal’s strength, than the male narrator was with Rhain’s. The alien overlord is a royal, but also a warrior, and while his actions showed his savage nature, I think the narration failed to do the same. It was still pleasant for the ears. A quite quick nice forgettable sci-fi romance with professional narrators.

Didn't Quite Hit the Mark

Very well written and creative story. I particularly loved the use of description to create really good imagery.

The narrators were quite good, giving more to the slightly depthless characters .

It was full of battles and fighting action, yet I found it a little boring.

I most especially found Mel, the female lead, a little annoying... from the bid of the author to make her impossibly perfect, to her somewhat irritating dialogue... right from the start of the book I just hated hearing "Your Overlordness"!!

Despite being well written, this is up there when it comes to books with some of the cringiest scenes and corniest lines/dialogue I have ever listened to.
