Very helpful

A great insight into basic level anxiety, low self esteem and depression. If you have a more severe level of these things, the book allows you the opportunity to recognise that and decide whether seeking more professional help is a good option.

Overall, I’m pleased with the final result and I do feel that I have a much more positive outlook on my life.

A real eye opener

If you could sum up Overcoming Low Self-Esteem in three words, what would they be?

Revealing, simple, effective

What could Melanie Fennell have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Nothing

Have you listened to any of the narrator’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

A friend to turn your life around

Any additional comments?

This is a self help book. A really effective look at what causes low self esteem and some very simple solutions to over coming it. The author/narrator is so very empathetic too in her approach, she really draws you in.

Series of very accessible talks

Where does Overcoming Low Self-Esteem rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

As a trainee counsellor I thought this was an excellent series of talks - both for myself as a counsellor and to recommend to clients who might be grappling with the issue of low self esteem.

The author [UK accent] reads through a series of talks which explain why low self esteem arises and goes through a series of steps that you can take to understand and overcome low self esteem.

She uses a CBT [cognitive behavioural therapy] approach which she explains very clearly. The idea being that you use the 'exercises' in the talks to understand what is going on for you with the result that you can improve your self esteem and be happier as a result.

What other book might you compare Overcoming Low Self-Esteem to, and why?

I've read a few of the 'Overcoming' series of book and they are all very accessible, which is probably why they are part of the UK's 'books on prescription' scheme - a self help scheme for people with mild to moderate mental health issues.

Have you listened to any of the narrator’s other performances? How does this one compare?

N/A

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It's too long to listen to all in one sitting, there's a lot to take in. I listened to it all the way through twice [over the course of several dog walks!] and I'm intending to listen to it again with a notebook to hand to make notes on each talk, the exercises etc.

Any additional comments?

Would very much recommend this if you feel you have a low self esteem and want to do something about it.

Great learning from a talented therapist

My therapist has often referred to Fennell's work in our sessions, so I sought this out with interest. Please do note that this is a follow up to the full title, and is more anecdotal, but nonetheless a valuable insight into how we operate. I really enjoyed the book, but wish I'd paid attention and got the full title first, so watch out for that too. Melanie has a lovely style, it feels like a genuinely warm chat, and not at all condescending or preachy. You probably know if you need this book, but be aware that it also opens themes in our lives that we've never considered, so don't dismiss it out of hand if you feel it doesn't apply. Cognitive therapy is costly, so this is a great entry to learn some foundations and possibly consider if you might wish to pursue some talking therapy too. I never valued the power of talking until I met my therapist, so maybe think twice yourself. Talking can heal.

Very helpful for increasing confidence

Narrator has a headmistress voice that is strong but kindly and caring. Listening to this audiobook enabled me to do some things I'd not dared to do. I'll be sure to listen to the audiobook again and again to integrate her very helpful no nonsense reassuring approach to life into my core.
