Summary
"He might be a nobody, but he was their nobody and their first case."
The new Kings Lake Central murder squad is about to spend its first morning on team-building exercises and reviewing cold cases when the call comes in that the body of one of the city's rough sleepers has been found in a shop doorway. It happens, someone says, he isn't the first to die on the streets and he won't be the last, but the story the new team begins to uncover is far from routine.
New characters appear and new relationships form as the pressure grows on Detective Chief Inspector Cara Freeman to deliver a result and show that Kings Lake's first specialist team is worth the money. Detective Sergeant Christopher Waters discovers links to a previous investigation, learns that there is more than one way to run a successful squad and finds flower arranging more interesting than he would ever have imagined.

Understated style
The writing is excellent. Thoughtful and measured. The narration is a perfect match for this.
The main thing I like about the series so far is that it feels far more realistic than many police murder series. So far, I’ve listened to 2 books in this series, and there have been 2 murders. One in each book. Some authors I’ve followed seem unable to make a book compelling without a far higher and vividly described, murder body count. I am tired of these books where murders are numerous, and the main police characters are all deeply troubled, or unable to go to work without having affairs, or fights. This series is a refreshing change of pace.
Also, I like the sometimes lengthy descriptions of police and legal processes.
The characters are all very interesting. No screaming at each other, so far, or physical fighting, or mating. I think this is a master class in precise and sensitive writing with a minimalist approach.
Good, believable plots.
Fantastic narration.

Another perfect story and performance
Nothing to dislike, interesting story that keeps you thinking, exceptional police procedure (think line of duty), wonderful narration. Thanks for another great audio book from Peter Grainger!

Another great investigation
I love the way this series links together and develops over time - the back stories constantly developing. I am already panicking about getting to the end of the series and having to wait for the author to deliver the newest instalment.

Another Great Story
I’ve become a big fan of Peter Grainger. He’s so good at drawing characters, plus his insights into police procedural challenges are second to none. I found the narrator very good, albeit a touch slow. Easily resolved by speeding up a touch. Highly recommended,

This series is brilliant
I would recommend the series of DC Smith books and the Kingslake books to anyone that likes a very well crafted and very well narrated detective story.

Really enjoying this series
I am really enjoying the follow on to the DC Smith series Chris Waters is turning in to a Smith with his humour and I like this the story line is great and I love all the characters, my only slight disappointment is there wasn't much from Smith in this book and please Peter don't spoil the love story. I am looking forward to the next book and as for the narrator he is very good and for me its Smith narrating the book just wouldn't be the same with another narrator so please carry on Gildart

likeable, realistic characters.
this is the second Kings Lake book I've listened to, and I will listen to more. Peter Grainger has a great ear for dialogue, and the book is full of believable and likable characters. The narrator really nails it. great stuff.

Every bit as good as the rest of the series
And by series I mean Kings Lake and the D C Smith books. This is a superb series, well written and read - with a great cast of characters who I for one have got extremely fond of. Just looking forward to the next instalment.
