About this listen
Sometimes the only way out is to fall further in…
As Earth's leaders gather to usher in a new era of interplanetary cooperation, a remarkable discovery in the skies above New Kerguelen threatens to destroy the peace on both worlds.
The consequences are so immediate and the potential ramifications so colossal, thoughts of a new era quickly fall by the wayside.
And when all that counts is surviving the tumultuous present, responsibility might fall again on Dan McCarthy -- humanity's once unwilling conduit between worlds -- to bravely take a leap like no other...

A little flat but still entertaining.
It's hard to follow up with a great first book. The first book was epic, with plenty of conspiracy but this seemed a little flat and convoluted. Still entertaining though.

A good mid series book, but a couple of issues
This book progresses the series well and introduces some strong plot lines for future use, but some of the chapters suffer from way too much exposition and could definitely benefit from some judicious editing.

Gripping to the end
I very much enjoyed this, story was more entertaining than the previous book , the ending has left me wanting much more, I have however got a query, IF the Alien mother Craft was needed to traverse the Gates, how did Leisha Dan Billy and Terra just Flash beck and forth from New Cargulen to Earth, however I can’t wait for the next instalment

No surprises
By now in this book series you'll know what it's all about. Entertaining but not exactly surprising. Still the characters are as strong as ever.

This is getting really good
Even though I have given this 4 Stars, this has got meek hooked and I'm going to book 6 right after this one. Though I have always loved this series, just for variety, I space them out with a couple of books before moving to the next in the series.
I do acknowledge small flaws, some of the writing is unnecessarily robotic and clunky and halters the flow. But there is also some really great writing. The Narrator does a great job giving each character their own voice as well as maintaining a separate narrator voice.
Currently on Book 6 which is titled 'Revelations'. This is a perfect word to describe my experience with this series. This series does not rely on misdirection and huge plot twists to keep you engaged. When the revelations come, they are really satisfying.

A bad day at the office!
All the books so far have had me gripped from the very beginning, not so here, this was just full of inane historical chat about every thing. I got to the point of swearing this was my last book in the series, which of course is not the case. Am happy to report that the book improved greatly in the second half.

Why?
This series gets more frustrating the further you read/listen. Unfortunately, once I start a book, I finish a book. If I enjoy book one of a series i.e. get emotionally involved with characters, I am compelled to finish the series. So I listened to the bitter end, despite the clunky writing, the constant recapping (that would ensure a goldfish could remember the plot from start to finish) and the lack of flesh on characters. People’s motivations appear to change for poor reasons, so characters go against type. Some main characters are sidelined (in a variety of ways) to make room for others and this is irksome.
Apart from the (often times badly worded and way too extensive) recaps - sometimes reminding you of something you read earlier in the chapter - there is way too much telling. Explaining why a character does a relatively unimportant (therefore relevance?) thing, rather than relying on it being obvious or letting the character explain, makes it a tedious listen. Some things are also better left to the imagination than over explained.
The ideas are great, the plot could have been expanded in any number of ways, but as it was, the plot line could be condensed into a more entertaining and less wordy book 4, rather than the flabby and infuriating books 4-6.

Getting dull now
I really enjoyed the first couple of these books but they have been stretched out with enormous amounts of padding. Each book follows the same format now. 6 plus hours of boring political guff and then it gets going . Then before you know it a cliff hangar ending. Every book could be 6 hours shorter and lose nothing.
