About this listen

The first book in the series that has garnered millions of fans across the globe, from New York Times best-selling author Robert Dugoni. Tracy Crosswhite has spent 20 years questioning the facts surrounding her sister Sarah’s disappearance and the murder trial that followed. She doesn’t believe that Edmund House - a convicted rapist and the man condemned for Sarah’s murder- is the guilty party.

Motivated by the opportunity to obtain real justice, Tracy became a homicide detective with the Seattle PD and dedicated her life to tracking down killers. When Sarah’s remains are finally discovered near their hometown in the northern Cascade mountains of Washington State, Tracy is determined to get the answers she’s been seeking.

As she searches for the real killer, she unearths dark, long-kept secrets that will forever change her relationship to her past - and open the door to deadly danger.

Critic reviews

“Dugoni does a superior job of positioning [the plot elements] for maximum impact, especially in a climactic scene set in an abandoned mine during a blizzard - which is melodramatic but nevertheless effective.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Combines the best of a police procedural with a legal thriller, and the end result is outstanding...Dugoni continues to deliver emotional and gut-wrenching, character-driven suspense stories that will resonate with any fan of the thriller genre.” (Library Journal)

“Yes, a conspiracy is revealed, but it’s an unexpected one, as moving as it is startling...The ending is violent, suspenseful, even touching. A nice surprise for thriller fans.” (Booklist, starred review)

Fantastic book - not as an audiobook unfortunately

My Sister’s Grave is a fantastic book that kept me on my toes right to the very end. I honestly did not see the conclusion coming and was gripped from start to finish.

The novel starts with the remains of a body being found in Tracy’s hometown, launching us immediately into a scene from 20 years ago depicting the shooting competition Tracy and her sister competed in before Sarah disappeared to never be seen again. These excerpts from their shared past do a fantastic job of outlining the relationship between the siblings and the closeness they shared to the point that I was brought to tears at points. “I am not afraid of the dark” will never have the same meaning for me again.

The overall storyline moves incredibly quickly to the point where I would say reading the prequels is almost imperative. They allow you to develop a liking for Tracy and her overall character that takes longer to develop within the first full length novel due to the sheer speed at which the story takes off at full gallop. After the body of Sarah is found, most of the book then revolves around not only the discovery of who did actually abduct and murder Tracy’s sister, but also the abdication of the convicted murderer who, Tracy believes, was wrongly accused and sentenced. It is a fascinatingly told story with a bit of everything; from the court scenes, to the mystery, to the heart pumping action and thriller aspects that I honestly did not see coming.

I loved every minute of this book and can’t wait to read the next in this series.

Note on the audiobook version: I normally thoroughly enjoy audiobooks and, to be clear, the narrator Emily Sutton-Smith has an engaging voice that I imagine would normally be perfectly suited to audiobooks. Unfortunately I absolutely do not recommend this book be listened to in audiobook format. There is a lot of changing from past to present tense, even within the same chapter at times, distinguishable only by the font becoming italicised to show we are now in the past. In the audio narration there is no such clarity making it harder work to listen to and sometimes a few sentences before you suddenly realise “oh wait! The tense has changed!” Which certainly somewhat removes one from the gravity of the story telling.

As a novel generally however, and as my 5 star review suggests, this is a fantastic book that I recommend to any crime, mystery, and thriller lovers.
