Summary

The tenth book in the Libby Sarjeant series of British murder mysteries which feature a retired actress as the female sleuth and are based in the picturesque village of Steeple Martin. Libby Sarjeant and her friend Fran Wolfe are asked to look into the sudden and unexplained death of a devoted churchgoer. The police appear to have lost interest, but the villagers are certain that their new lady vicar has something to do with it! But if it is murder, how was it done? Could it be - magic?

Lesley Cookman started writing almost as soon as she could read, and filled many exercise books with pony stories until she was old enough to go out with boys. After following a varied career as a model, air stewardess and disc jockey, she turned to writing short fiction and features for a variety of magazines, before graduating from the University of Wales with an MA in Creative Writing. She has taught writing for both Kent Adult Education and the WEA and edited the first Sexy Shorts collection of short stories from Accent Press in aid of the Breast Cancer Campaign.

She lives on the Kent coast and has four grown up children and a passion for community theatre. She has written 10 titles in the Libby Sarjeant Murder Mysteries series and has also published How To Write A Pantomime

What the Narrator Says

"Lesley Cookman's Libby Serjeant female sleuth series is a joy to read. I loved Libby and her best friend and psychic investigative partner, Fran. Their constant banter keeps you amused throughout their various crime-solving escapades. I felt as if I was part of the gang in "The Pink Geranium", the local restaurant, popping in to enjoy a few glasses of wine, a nice meal, and more banter with Libby's husband and various other pals, including the proprietors, Peter and Harry. Lesley Cookman draws you into Libby's world, spurring you on to share the next case and the next!" Deryn Edwards, narrator of the Libby Sarjeant Mysteries.

Unfortunate character accent

The narrator chose a grating accent for one of the key characters, making large parts of the story very difficult to listen to for more than a few minutes. It may have suited the author's vision of this character but narrators need to consider how it sounds to the listener when there are chunks of dialogue.

narrator error...

This title was the first of my Libby Sarjeant collection. I wish I'd chosen a different narrator for my first experience. She ruined an excellent plot and otherwise perfect characters.

A difficult listen

Gave up the first time. I understand that different characters need different voices but Libby and especially Alice were particularly harsh on the eardrums! Story a bit implausible. Seemed as though the author had updated something written in the fifties.

a friend from the past gets libby involved again.

Any additional comments?

this is the third book performed by derwyn Edwards and her voices for the different characters don't bother me anymore or spoil the story.
another really good story where another character is added to the list (this time the lady vicar),
you do need to start this series from the beginning - a murder in steeple martin - to get to know the characters and their relationship to each other.
recommended as a cosy read crime series.
