About this listen

The first in an exciting historical mystery series set in the home of Agatha Christie!

Tucked away among Devon's rolling green hills, Mallowan Hall combines the best of English tradition with the modern conveniences of 1930. Housekeeper Phyllida Bright, as efficient as she is personable, manages the large household with an iron fist in her very elegant glove. In one respect, however, Mallowan Hall stands far apart from other picturesque country houses....

The manor is home to archaeologist Max Mallowan and his famous wife, Agatha Christie. Phyllida is both loyal to and protective of the crime writer, who is as much friend as employer. An aficionado of detective fiction, Phyllida has yet to find a gentleman in real life half as fascinating as Mrs Agatha's Belgian hero, Hercule Poirot. But though accustomed to murder and its methods as frequent topics of conversation, Phyllida is unprepared for the sight of a very real, very dead body on the library floor....

A former army nurse, Phyllida reacts with practical common sense - and a great deal of curiosity. It soon becomes clear that the victim arrived at Mallowan Hall under false pretences during a weekend party. Now, Phyllida not only has a houseful of demanding guests on her hands - along with a distracted, anxious staff - but hordes of reporters camping outside. When another dead body is discovered - this time, one of her housemaids - Phyllida decides to follow in M. Poirot's footsteps to determine which of the Mallowans' guests is the killer. With help from the village's handsome physician, Dr Bhatt, Mr Dobble, the butler, along with other household staff, Phyllida assembles the clues. Yet, she is all too aware that the killer must still be close at hand and poised to strike again. And only Phyllida's wits will prevent her own story from coming to an abrupt end....

Slow to get going but pulls you in

I tried it because it was free and I’ve been a Christie fan since I was old enough to read her books. It is quite slow to get going as there is a lot of scene setting and the author gives you lots more of the narrators internal monologue and character detail than AC used to do. However I was drawn in, I started to like the main characters and I wanted to know who the murderer was. The red herrings and false trails were good and the ending very satisfactory. I shall be listening to book two.

Long Winded

As others have said in previous reviews, the book/audio book is much too long. There are so many unnecessary details. Some details of the surroundings and people are needed but in this story they are in excess. The American words that slipped in to what should be a wholly British story were like gnat bites, you never see them coming but intensely irritating!
I'm not sure I can face the next book just yet, if its less than 9 hours then maybe.

Long winded!

Though very well read, from the very beginning it felt like a pot-boiler and my suspicions were very quickly confirmed, though it was free, and so is BBC radio!

Great story and narration. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. It was a nice twist to set the murders in the home of Agatha Christie.

Poor Grammar and Language

Despite a good voice reading, there were so many irritating Americanisms and some blatantly dreadful grammatical errors I had to stop listening (stuck it out to chapter 13). It was even more jarring because of the era/setting to hear these errors and modern American words in the accent of the narrator. Performance itself wasn't bad but really disappointed that an apparently award winning writer couldn't be bothered to do her research.

Good Story

A good story when it got going. Some American words crept in, but overall I enjoyed this book. It was an easy listen while doing jobs about the house.

Out of Time

The text is quite verbose and many elements of the story do not sit well with the time in which the action takes place.
