Summary

The Oast Theatre in Steeple Martin is hosting a touring production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night which is attracting a lot of attention. But very soon it begins to attract attention of an entirely different kind when a document goes missing along with its owner. When a body turns up, Libby Sarjeant and Fran Wolfe become involved with the investigation with the help, naturally, of their friends and relatives.

Disappointing plot

After a run of really strong novels (Run, Barrel etc) I found Murder and the Glovemaker's Son a little disappointing. There were some really strong elements - the Shakespeare connection and the house and theatre history - but the ending all felt a bit flat. Ian's Poirot like explanation seemed a rush to get to the ending and for me didn't explain the motivations of the various characters well enough. (I listened to the final chapters twice to make sure I hadn't missed something.) Fran's mystical moments were especially vague and didn't really add much to the plot. Recurring characters popped up to offer the chance for an abridged summary of plot to date. There was a moment when I though we were going to get some real drama when Ben told Libby off, but even this fell flat and was underdeveloped.
In summary, it just felt like a good idea for a story but got a bit unfocused along the way.

A bit tame, boring at times.

A bit tame and laborious. I dozed of so many times I had to keep going back to read bits again. Not up to Lesley's usual standard and was very tame. I think you're running out of story lines Lesley. Sorry!
