From the bestselling author of The Familiars and The Foundling comes Stacey Halls' most compelling and ambitious novel to date.
'Something's not right here.'
I was aware of Mr Booth's eyes on me, and he seemed to hold his breath. 'What do you mean?'
'In the house. With the family.'
West Yorkshire, 1904. When newly graduated nurse Ruby May takes a position looking after the children of Charles and Lilian England, a wealthy couple from a powerful dynasty of mill owners, she hopes it will be the fresh start she needs. But as she adapts to life at the isolated Hardcastle House, it becomes clear there's something not quite right about the beautiful, mysterious Mrs England.
Distant and withdrawn, Lilian shows little interest in her children or charming husband, and is far from the 'angel of the house' Ruby was expecting. As the warm, vivacious Charles welcomes Ruby into the family, a series of strange events forces her to question everything she thought she knew. Ostracised by the servants and feeling increasingly uneasy, Ruby must face her demons in order to prevent history from repeating itself. After all, there's no such thing as the perfect family - and she should know.
Simmering with slow-burning menace, Mrs England is a portrait of an Edwardian marriage, weaving an enthralling story of men and women, power and control, courage, truth and the very darkest deception. Set against the atmospheric West Yorkshire landscape, Stacey Halls' third novel proves her one of the most exciting and compelling new storytellers of our times.

'Both dazzling and dark, as beautiful as it is disturbing. A captivating, sensuous novel' Inga Vesper, author of The Long, Long Afternoon

Beautifully written; beautifully read
I have enjoyed all of Stacey's novels but this is the best by far. A heroine you can believe in is such a rare gift. And truly, I thought Imogen Wilde read the entire story beautifully, with empathy, with feeling, with intelligence. Her accents were admirable and she slipped seamlessly between them, as the story required. 'Mrs England' on Audible has been a genuine pleasure and a very welcome escape from a currently very scary world.

Intriguing story wonderful narration
I anticipated this novel by Stacey Halls, ordering it in advance, having no doubt that it would be a good read/ listen and it didn’t disappoint. The book had several intriguing story lines, which were brought to life wonderfully by Imogen Wilde’s narration.
I highly recommend!

The narration was great - don’t be put off by the negative reviews
Another great book from Stacey Halls! This is my favourite after the Familiars. Don’t be put off by the negative reviews about the narration - it was great. The main character is from Birmingham - and the narrator skilfully delivers her accent as well as those of the other characters.

Beautiful writing
I’m now a big fan of Stacey Halls, having finished The Foundling recently too. Now starting The Familiars and am engrossed already. This one I thought lacked a bit of pace in the first half, but made up for it in the last third. The narrator is fabulous - all the accents spot on. Characters all came to life. Shame some reviewers are moaning about the Black Country accent - bizarre! Definitely worth a listen, as the writing is stunning.

Really enjoyed
A great listen, well read but having just finished The Foundling by the same author I was a little disappointed as it’s not as good, but worth the investment nevertheless.
