About this listen

A serial killer - your neighbor, friend, even your spouse?

Serial killers: Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer are often the first names that spring to mind. Many people assume serial killers are primarily an American phenomenon that came about in the latter part of the 20th century. But such assumptions are far from the truth. Serial killers have been around for a very long time and can be found in every corner of the globe - and they're not just limited to the male gender either. Some of these predators have been caught and brought to justice whereas others have never been found, let alone identified. Serial killers can be anywhere. And scarier still, they can be anyone.

Edited by acclaimed author and anthologist Mitzi Szereto, The Best New True Crime Stories: Serial Killers reveals all-new accounts of true crime serial killers from the contemporary to the historic. The international list of contributors includes award-winning crime writers, true-crime podcasters, journalists, and experts in the dark crimes field such as Martin Edwards, Lee Mellor, Danuta Kot, Craig Pittman, Richard O. Jones, Marccie Rendon, Mike Browne, and Vicki Hendricks.

If you are a fan of true crime books such as I'll Be Gone in the Dark, Mindhunter, The Devil in the White City, or Peter Vronsky's Sons of Cain; you will want to listen to Mitzi Szereto's The Best New True Crime Stories: Serial Killers. This book will leave you wondering if it's ever really possible to know who's behind the mask you're allowed to see.

Good 😊 listen.

Nice one, good selection of cases covered. There were several I'd never heard of before. It's well researched and read.

Distressing content

OK so it's a book about serial killers and it's not going to be a laugh a minute. it's a dark subject.

But I was NOT expecting the content to include violent assault and killing of children or the brutal necrophilia and rape of young women.

This was simply too upsetting and should come with a clear warning up front.

However the narration and writing was good. Just prepare yourself because the content is grotesque from the outset.

Harrowingly good.

Scary because the subject matter are real people. The events actually took place, well read too.

Great subject, poor narration

The information and detail of the crimes is great, but the narration is very robotic.

The Best New True Crime Stories

Absolutely Fascinating and very informative. No doubt whatsoever that this book has been a brilliant taster for my upcoming Criminology / Sociology Degree course that I start this September.
I’m sure we will study some of the cases that have been written about here.
Thanks for a great introduction.

Offensive

Using unnecessary over-descriptive language to describe a child murder victims last moments is horrible. A deliberate to shock and titillate. Many more instances throughout, so gave up. Horrible

full of inaccuracies

This book is full of inaccuracies and untruths. The author clearly has little knowledge of the UK prison system.

Talking like a satnav

I am not the only one, it seems, to note this: she talks like a computer-generated voice. A spoken book needs a better speaker, I’m afraid.
