Summary
Mark Franklin came from the American West to Edwardian England with two long-barrelled .44s in his baggage and a fortune in silver in the bank. Where he had got it and what he was looking for no one could guess, although they wondered – at Scotland Yard, in City offices, in the glittering theatreland of the West End, in the highest circles of Society (even King Edward was puzzled) and in the humble pub at Castle Lancing. Tall dark and dangerous, soft spoken and alone, with London at his feet and a dark shadow in his past, he was a mystery to all of them, rustics and royalty, squires and suffragettes, the women who loved him and the men who feared and hated him. He came from a far frontier in another world, yet he was by no means a stranger… even old General Flashman, who knew men and mischief better than most, never guessed the whole truth about “Mr American”.

The Anti Flashman
Strong sense of period. Don't go in expecting a Flashman novel, though he does appear in a supporting role.
William Hope is always a reliable narrator, but excels here.

Engrossing story
Not as humorous as GMcDF's usual stuff but engrossing never the less and full of the usual factual history cross over you expect from him.

A great deviation from the Flashman series
I listened to this with some trepidation as I'd only dipped into the Flashman books before.
But I needn't have worried, It is an intriguing story, as ever with GMF, the story though fictional, interwoven with real history, and in this instance in wonderful contrast to the staid but morally degenerate British high society of the late 1910's.
Its not a 'Flashman' though, it's not comedic. But GMF does include the old rogue and those parts are classic Flashy, as a reminder of how accurately the author can recreate late Victorian attitudes.
Its sometimes quite slow and reflective as the main character contemplates his new life and reminiscences over his past life but rather than detract from the story it enhances in my opinion.
Anyway, try it, It won't disappoint if you like his writing style and the narrator is very good at the multifarious accents/characters he has to inhabit.

Observation
Realism was convincing to this experienced octogenarian who is fully aware of most aspects of the story.

Egaging, witty, humorous!
Another classic from GMF the existence of which I knew nothing of until this audio version appeared on audible.
It's a really engaging book, with enjoyable overlaps with the life of Gen Sir Harry Flashman.
A decent length, I've had fun listening to it in recent days and it has just kept be company on the 12 hour drive up to the north of Scotland.
Well worth a listen/read.

Men in tights
I despair for some people……
What is one of GMF’s classics, chock full of Historical research and characters (have Mr Google at the ready when reading) described as ‘boring’ amazes me.
I know there are no men in tights pretending to have special powers or big explosions and you need to have an attention span of more than a goldfish which may rule out readers under 40 but this IS very very good.
Even the slightly long Bridge match is full of little nuggets for those paying attention.
For those Sir Harry fans he’s there too and he mentions a couple of War/Battles he was involved in that I’m pretty sure hither-too we’re unaware of.
A cracking good read/listen expertly narrated.

Different to the flash man papers but still very enjoyable.
Certainly a slower pace than usual GMF stories but I found it captivating nonetheless. I thought the narration was excellent and really added to the story.

Boring!
I've rarely come across such a tedious book. Storyline was non-existent. Couldn't finish it.

Slow story, great stortelling
The plot moves very slowly. It is well told by a superb actor. Gentle and takes its time.
