Summary
Sherlock Holmes is dead.
Days after Holmes and his arch-enemy Moriarty fall to their doom at the Reichenbach Falls, Pinkerton agent Frederick Chase arrives from New York. The death of Moriarty has created a poisonous vacuum which has been swiftly filled by a fiendish new criminal mastermind. Ably assisted by Inspector Athelney Jones, a devoted student of Holmes's methods of investigation and deduction, Chase must hunt down this shadowy figure, a man much feared but seldom seen, a man determined to engulf London in a tide of murder and menace.

A gripping read from start to finish
A must-read, in a word "unputdownable". Can't wait to try the author's other titles. The narrator was excellent, really brought the story to life! 5 stars from me

A Surprising Twist on the Sherlock Holmes Theme
If you could sum up Moriarty in three words, what would they be?
Easy to follow on from the traditional Sherlock Holmes stories

The Frederick Chase character was the most surprising element of the book
What does Julian Rhind-Tutt and Derek Jacobi bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
The reading of the story helps create a more detailed scene in my mind.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The loss of one of the main characters after setting the scene of his family life.

Can't spoil the plot so can only say EXCELLENT!
The storyline and plot is so much more intense with the excellent characterizations of the narrator, Julian Rhind-Tutt. As I got towards the end I didn't want it to finish. I was hoping against hope things were not what they seemed. You can't say too much in your review as it will give the game away. But a brilliant read for any Sherlock Holmes fan and also crime readers. Another great audio book :)

Slow Burner
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is not a Sherlock Holmes book and I would not recommend to Sherlock Holmes fans.
However I do think that it has much to offer. This started slowly and half way through you find yourself waiting for the twist in the tale. Does it ever arrive. Listen to the book..
Which character – as performed by Julian Rhind-Tutt and Derek Jacobi – was your favourite?
The performances in this book were a highlight. Each character given their own voice and traits which were maintained throughout.

Overrated
These previous reviews have stated the book is gripping for about 3/4 but then slows. I prefer the procedural rather than the violence so that bit wasn’t for me. I got the twist well before the end which isn’t something that happens that often and was so disappointing when it came. I felt it was too far fetched and unrealistic so didn’t enjoy the last few chapters. Without giving too many spoilers, I think the title needed to be something different as your constantly questioning what this has all got to do with the Holmes universe. (Read the book to understand). Overall, enjoyed both performances of house of silk and this - both a good yarn- but will be sticking to the originals, esp the one read by Stephen fry.

Don’t bother!
I like Horowitz as a tv writer and love his modern crime novels, but as a hardcore Conan Doyle fan I find this one, like House of Silk, a disappointment. The pace is painfully slow (gory detail doesn’t help, character and story are lacking) and the dialogue feels stilted and fake. All of this derives in part from the central conceit of this story which grindingly builds towards an inevitable twist in the tail. Honestly Horowitz is better than this and I’d thoroughly recommend instead you go read his newer books where he puts his Sherlock Holmes lore into a contemporary setting.
