About this listen

On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, and the space race was born. Desperate to beat the Russians into space, NASA put together a crew of the nation's most daring test pilots: the seven men who were to lead America to the moon. The first into space was Alan Shepard; the last was Deke Slayton, whose irregular heartbeat kept him grounded until 1975. They spent the 1960s at the forefront of NASA's effort to conquer space, and Moon Shot is their inside account of what many call the 20th century's greatest feat - landing humans on another world.

Collaborating with NBC's veteran space reporter Jay Barbree, Shepard, and Slayton narrate, in gripping detail, the story of America's space exploration from the time of Shepard's first flight until he and 11 others had walked on the moon.

Good book, poor reading

The book has a lot of fascinating detail about the endeavours, mishaps, successes and political manoeuvres during the space race from Mercury to Apollo. The reading regrettably is monotone and lets the book down.

Politcal and Adminstration View

I enjoyed this one, a third person narrative drawing on contributions from Shepard and Slayton. Draws on the personal and close-knit nature of the Mercury 7. Given their various careers since Mercury we have here a worthwhile and interesting administrative eye view of the human programmes. Concludes with Skylab and the Soyuz Apollo mission which is often overlooked in these histories. worth a listen

The right depth and pace

Enjoyed this 'till the very end. Great insights into the high's and low's of the space programs. Really liked how the story goes back and forth between the Soviet and US programs chronologically. Narrator was great too.

Thorough, rich and entertaining

Highly recommended to anyone interested in the subject, especially as a counterpoint to Tom Wolfe’s ‘the right stuff.’ Well structured narrative is generously populated with detail, description and competent storytelling, in order to make this an exciting and captivating tour from the initiation of project Mercury to the triumphant completion of the Apollo programme. Helped in no small part by the personalities of the two main authors, the reader/listener is immersed in this period of heroism, ambition and discovery. The publisher has given the final chapter a more political aspect, which verges on a blaming exercise for perceived nasa inaction in recent years. This has evidently been added after the death of the authors and while it is informative, it jars a little with the sentiments of the rest of the book. This is over quickly however, and does not impact the attractive aspects of the whole. Highly recommended to those interested in the personal viewpoints of those at the heart of humanity’s first steps into space.

Fantastic

A story I have always been fascinated with, and thought I knew everything there was to know. But this novel taught me piles of bee facts I had no idea of. The narrator in my opinion takes a chapter or two to get used to, but he expertly tells the tale. A must listen for any space flight fanatic.

Excellent book, well worth a listen

I enjoyed this book, it drew me in to the world of Nasa and the brave men that risked their lives to adventure further than anyone has ever been. Deke and Alan's stories encourage you to stick with it and hopefully your dream will come true.
I can't recommend this more.

Of technical but a very good listen

Stories from the astronauts point of view are as good as a technical one. I just need to get hold off Deke’s autobiography to piece everything together. This was a good listen and gave an interesting point near then end of the book of how NASA changed under a new administration, something I didn’t know.

Great personal testimony of experience of earth and moon orbit

Immersive experience of the space program from the mouths of those who lived it. Got better and better.

Amazing insight into NASA

Much more interesting than I thought, a great insiders view of the American space missions.
