Summary

After many months of clandestine organisation, Vercingetorix, backed by the druids and leading an army of rebellious tribes, is ready to make his first moves towards independence for his people and the annihilation of Rome's presence in Gaul. Meanwhile, Caesar tends to business in Aquileia, unaware that he is cut off from the bulk of his army in the north by the rebellion. Fronto and his friends are heading for a clash of armies the likes of which the north has never seen, and the Tenth's legate is about to face his most trying year yet facing his opposite number - a chieftain of the Arverni - across the fields and hills of Gaul towards the greatest siege he's ever experienced: Alesia.

Brilliant as always

Good old Fronto never disappoints. Even when one knows the history, SJA Turney manages to grab the heart and soul with twists and turns. I even cried this time, thanks to a combination of brilliant writing and excellent characterisation and narration by Malk Williams. Another Tour de Force read from him.

Another cracker

Another great read in the Marius’s mules series. The only disappointing part is when it ends

Another cracker

Once again caught up in the wars in Gaul Fronto is thrust into a series of battles that sees friends slaughtered. As always the action and battle scenes are carefully and skilfully drawn, the characters rounded and vivid, the politics intense.

amazed

I am amazed at how impressive each novel in series, and this one an epic over 20hrs, improves in writing skill, narration too. characters so real I feel pain at a passing and care for those in Frontos' familia/legion. the detail of gallic life, roman encampment, and terrifying battle sequence. and luckily there are 6 more to come.
