Summary
She is firmly on the shelf. He needs a wife for his motherless children. Surely nothing would go amiss in their quest to find true love?
Miss Phoebe Westbrook wishes she was anywhere other than at Lord Livesey’s house party. Family loyalty and duty forced her to accept the invitation. When she overhears Lord Livesey’s opinion of her, she knows he feels the same. Determined to make the most of his library whilst visiting, she soon finds herself being drawn into the lives of Lord Livesey and his children, whether she likes it or not.
Meanwhile, Lord Livesey has lived a lie. His marriage was not the love match everyone presumed. His children are strangers to him. After the death of his wife, he hid from the world. Persuaded to host a house party in which he’s now trapped, he scorns the women in attendance. After dismissing Phoebe cruelly, it seems that a future with her may be just the thing he's looking for....
An unconventional marriage proposal causes everything to be called into question. Misplaced values and hidden emotions will test any chance of a relationship they might have. Both will face hurdles they never anticipated, but one thing's for sure - life won’t ever be the same again. If you like simmering chemistry, troubled heroes and feisty women, you'll love Audrey Harrison's Regency tale.

Improves after an implausible beginning
Rich, titled widower and father agrees to host a house party that includes a number of eligible would be brides. He chooses a woman pregnant with her footman lover's child as he doesn't want a love match but a mother for his children. The little matter of a male bastard inheriting his title and estates doesn't seem to occur to him until he reads his fiancée's conditions - after he has announced their betrothal and sent a notice to the newspaper.
It improves though.

a mixed bag for me
I did enjoy the book, but halfway through it entered into silly ville, but it recovered by the end.
The heroine is lovely... the hero is extremely flawed & a bit unlikeable.
I loved that the heroine had a backbone & respected herself!
She was always able to give a set down (when needed), but was never rude nor vulgar about it nor felt the need to put someone down to make herself feel better... we ship!
In real life, people would think she was a genuine person.
I also liked that she did not fall at his feet as soon as he said the "magic words"... which is one of my pet peeves in these types of books... as though saying I love you erases all ills.
She only relents when she SEES how much he does love her... which was a really nice touch!
The hero shows how flawed we all are & can be & perfectly demonstrates how we can lash out unfeelingly when we're hurting, but he recognises his faults & tries to improve himself... which is also great in my eyes!

Wonderful romantic story
Thoroughly enjoyed this book.Added enjoyment as it was a freebee on Plus. The narrator was wonderful . Did get a a bit angsty but that was ok and a few tears along the way.
A nice epilogue to finish with. I do recommend this story to anyone who loves a gentle romance.

A regency style romance
Very simple story, easy to listen to, interesting characters who keep your attention, predictable and comforting as a cosy winter woolly!

Enjoyable book spoiled by the narrator
I enjoyed this book but have given only 2 stars for the narrators performance. All the characters sounded the same and sentences sounded disjointed . It was read in a singy song style I really hated. I would like to read this book myself and see how I enjoy it then.
