Summary

A woman from the past brings a whole lot of trouble....

A brilliant Myron Bolitar novel from the Sunday Times best-selling author of Six Years.

Myron is summoned to Paris at the behest of an old lover, Terese. She is in unspecified trouble and needs his help. When he gets there, he discovers that her husband has been murdered and she is the main suspect. The interesting thing is that more than one blood-type has been discovered at the scene - and the other blood can only be attributed to her daughter. But she died 10 years before.

As Myron and Terese try to find out exactly what's going on, they uncover more and more questions. Did the daughter really die? Did Terese's husband have a further child with someone else?

But the truth is something no one expected....

AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL narrator.

This is one of the worst narrators I've suffered. He's so bad that he spoils an otherwise good story. There are 3 problems.

1) His delivery. Every sentence is read in the same voice, with the same emphasis and the same inflection. There's no variety. Irony, humour and drama all go out the window.

2) The different voices. His reading of Therese is distractingly bad. He sounds like he's doing an impression of a stereotypical gay man (think Nathan Lane in The Birdcage). To be clear, he doesn't sound like a stereotypical gay man, he sounds like he's doing an impression of one. It's AWFUL. The French characters are similarly bad. One character is described as having an accent that's not English, perhaps Spanish -- so the narrator does a bad English accent. When there is an English character, he does what Americans think all English people sound like, i.e. wide of the mark.

3) Lack of preparation. A lot of the beginning of the book takes place in Paris, which gives the narrator ample opportunity to mangle everything possible. He talks about the Pont "Noof" (Neuf) with a definite "oof" like he's been kicked in the scrotum, and he uses at least 3 different pronunciations of "quai" (k-why, key, and keh). A French character talks about a restaurant on "Saint" Michel, pronounced the English way, and the same character also talks about Catherine Deneuve, but using the pronunciation of an American doing what he thinks a French person would use for Catherine, i.e Kasserin, rather than the French way -- Katreen. The police chief he talks to is called Captain Berleand. He also uses about 3 different pronunciations for that.

It's the delivery that's the biggest problem.
EVERY.
SINGLE.
SENTENCE.
is read the same way.

There was one part where I wondered if he was doing an impression of John Wayne. That's the way he delivers these lines.

Would I listen to another book with this narrator? No. You couldn't pay me to listen to him again. He has recorded 2 other Harlan Coben novels, but I'll give those a wide berth.

An underwhelming unsatisfying finale

Firstly, the performance is great. The voice for the main characters is great. Some sub characters and females may have similar/identical (lol) voices but I respect how difficult it can be do do various voices. As long as the main cast are good I'm happy, and they are great

Now unfortunately the story did not work for me. It starts out with an awesome sub plot that has me smiling and laughing out loud, but from there it is a slow decline as the story goes on and devolves into the most unsatisfying conclusions to character arcs and especially when there is a cool character that you get behind, to fail with such a rubbish conclusion... I have no choice to to give the opinion of avoid this book :(

Then concluding the story at the end just had me rolling my eyes. I hope this plot doesn't follow on into the next book in the series. Best forgotten about

One more thing. I'm not even sure the sub plot wasn't forgotten about??? I cant say for sure. May have being struggling to get through the book near the end and just missed it

Great!

The imitation of women voice was the only bad part in this book. Great story though
He never disappoints

Awesome.

Excellent. No boring interludes, full throttle all the way through with characters to love along the journey.

Not my favourite Harlan Coben Novel

I absolutely love Win and Myron stories but I found Therese extremely annoying. I also found it very difficult to concentrate to the narrator. Also, I always think the more Win the better!!
