Summary

Mike Sexton is a legend in the poker world.

In a life spanning over four decades as a poker professional, Mike has excelled both on the felt and on the business side of poker. He is a World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner, helped create PartyPoker in 2001, and was a key player in an event that changed the poker world forever - the launch of the World Poker Tour (WPT) in 2002. He has been a commentator on the WPT, along with Vince Van Patten, since its inception.

In addition, Mike was recognized as poker's Top Ambassador at the Card Player Magazine Player of the Year Awards gala in 2006. That same year, he won WSOP Tournament of Champions, winning $1 million in prize money - half of which he donated to charity. He was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2009.

In this book, Mike recounts his personal experiences and gives his take on some of poker's legendary characters over the past 40 years. If you enjoy poker, are fascinated by the development of the game, and enjoy compelling poker, golf, and gambling adventures, then you'll love Life's a Gamble.

Finally an anecdotal poker book!

Any additional comments?

I have long been searching for a poker book that isn't concerned with strategy, something that I can listen to casually and will spark my interest in the game. This book is exactly that. Mike Sexton details his career in poker, golf and sports gambling with numerous anecdotes featuring some names you'll recognise and some you'll want to know more about.

If I have one criticism it is that for some reason Sexton repeats quotes and smaller details of anecdotes as though he hasn't previously told you the exact same thing earlier in the book.

Overall it is a great read, by a very interesting individual and the self-narration brings an additional quality to the book.

Great stories!

Thank you for all the stories Mike! I learned a lot about you, and your life, a life well lived! Mike is a deserved Hall of famer, I'm just very sad I never met you. Mike is much loved in the poker community and is very much missed.

Great book

Brilliant book no dull points. The story’s are crazy from Vegas back in the day. This book is a wild ride from the life of a gambler. Well worth a read.

Must hear for any poker player.

Great hear especially as Mike does the reading. I've heard a bunch of the stories before but they sound so much better coming from someone that lived them.

A better poker player than narrator or author.

After the first section about his childhood the audiobook seems to get bogged down in bland descriptions of games he's seen or been in. His attitudes to life were too right wing and unthinking and made me like the man less.
