Summary

FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE
Winner of the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year 2024
Winner of the Crime Writers’ Association ILP John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger 2024

One detective driven by instinct, the other by logic.
It will take both to find a killer who knows the true meaning of fear . . .

When the body of a man is found crucified at the top of Mount Judd, DCS Kat Frank and AIDE Lock – the world’s first AI detective – are thrust into the spotlight with their first live case.

But when they discover another man dead – also crucified – it appears that the killer is only just getting started. When the Future Policing Unit issues an extraordinary warning to local men to avoid drinking in pubs, being out alone late at night and going home with strangers, they face a hostile media frenzy. Whilst they desperately search for connections between the victims, time is running out for them to join the dots and prevent another death.

And if Kat and Lock know anything, it’s that killers rarely stop – until they are made to.

Aide Locke is fascinating

I enjoyed this book almost as much as the first, although I hope that book 3 features more of Aide Locke

Great follow up

Really enjoyed the contemporary storyline with the integration of an AI detective into the police force. Loving the developing relationships between the characters. Great plotting too. Look forward to the next installment.

Brilliant characters and an exciting plot.

It’s fascinating to see how the aide Lock develops in this second book about the AI detective.

Techno thriller with heart and soul

Whatever the equivalent of "I couldn't put this down" is for an audiobook (I couldn't take my ear buds out?) it definitely describes my experience with this gripping, well-crafted sequel.

Callaghan's characters are nuanced and engaging, the writing is crisp and the captivating plot takes you to places you don't expect to go.

Without giving anything away, the theme of the book is important, always and increasingly so,

Leave No Trace certainly left it's mark on me.

Can’t wait for the next one

I’m not normally a fan of technology but this is brilliant and as good as the first book .

Genius

Another great contemporary story covering many current issues without sacrificing the story telling.

Some of the tech is too much

An enjoyable listen, good story, well paced, well narrated. As good as book 1. My only issue (and this applies to book 1 as well, though it probably won’t stop me listening to book 3 when it arrives) is that the tech is sometimes unrealistic. Your main leap of faith is the AI itself but you get on board with this as it’s probable future tech that isn’t that far off based on current AI, It’s just been brought forward to aide the story. However the AI seems to live and run on (not be remotely connected to) a device that is comparable to Fitbit. A Fitbit that can not only run the full AI model, but do so on a never ending battery. The device can also project a full holographic representation of the AI with Lidar scanners on the device being able to scan the room to such a degree that the holographic image that pops up from nowhere can look around the room regardless of whereabouts the device might be pointing. It can also seemingly project through walls (Locke, go outside and entertain the children whilst I speak to the mum). Finally the hologram can seemingly speak (the voice seems to come from the hologram itself rather than the device). This is a Fitbit I would like to own!
