About this listen

Lady Jane Grey was born into the most dangerous of times. Child of a scheming father and a ruthless mother for whom she was a pawn in a dynastic game with the highest stakes, she lived a life in thrall to political machinations and lethal religious fervour.

Growing up with the future Queen Elizabeth and her reluctant nemesis, Mary, she soon learned the truth of the values imparted to her by Henry VIII's last Queen, Katherine Parr. Her honesty, intelligence and strength of character carried her through all the vicious twists of Tudor power politics to her nine-day reign and its unbearably poignant conclusion.

Very enlightening. Great listen on audible.

It took me a while to get into this but once in, I was hooked. I'm now going to get others by Alison Weir.

Fabulous book

I love history books including historical fiction. I knew the story of Lady Jane Grey from studying at school but this story really brings it home just how weird that particular point of history got. Touring and frying of religious zealots on both sides proves how divisive religion can be, leading to death destruction of both people and, almost, nations. A wonderful read.

Fantastic

As a Scot who’s ignorant about most of these shenanigans I found this absolutely fascinating and so interesting. I have enormous respect for anyone who could put together such a comprehensive account, and it will not be my last book by this author.
My attention was completely gripped all the way through and I was sorry when it finished.
Some of it was a wee bit near the nuckle but this was a very, very, violent time, and, again, the author is to be commended for exposing all the gory details, don’t let that put you off.

Very Interesting, heart breaking.

We visit Bradgate Park Leicester a lot and I never knew much about the history of Lady Jane Grey so I found it to be very interesting. To learn about the experiences of her life, it was very emotional at times but it kept me listening.

Bringing to life.

The narration was superb throughout, with a clear and reasonable insight of the thinking of that era. The obvious youth and manipulation of poor Lady Jane was well portrayed.

History brought to life

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned a lot. I thought the way Alison Weir brought her extensive knowledge of history to life by telling the tragic story from each character's point of view was a great technique. I was also impressed by Patience Tomlinson's skilful reading, giving each character an individual voice, a great art.

its Alison Weir - so you know it's great already

brilliant fictional book but with the under pinning of the life of a poor young girl who is often forgotten in history.

Totally grabbed!!!

Simply, I couldn't stop listening. As Alison says, she is interested in the psychological aspects of the story. For me, this came over well.
The difficulty of individuals living with the demands of both society and extreme religious dogmas are very well illustrated.
Also it was well read by Patience Tomlinson, bringing characters to life.
